Sycce Syncra 3.0 SDC Variable flow modes?

Hey all! I was reviewing potential pumps for a current build. Looking over the owners manual pdf. for the Sycce Syncra 3.0 SDC pump that would be potentially going in my sump as the return pump. It looks like there are different settings to simulate different flow patterns eg reef crest, slow current, fast current. Was curious do you guys use these settings to simulate different environments or do you just balance the gph with the overflow ? Sort of at a constant 50% capacity or whatever works for your system. My current plan set up is a Herbie overflow, set the gph of the syncra at 5x volume turnover/hr and tune the Herbie to minimize noise etc with gate. But, these different settings have me curious as I haven't seen anyone talk about them only with the wavemakers. Also, second question does anyone know where the charts are for the Head pressure/GPH. I'd have a head height of approx 48 inches so was trying to figure out where Id have to set the pump to achieve the desired GPH with my head height but can't seam to locate the charts. Thanks!!

You typically want to leave the return pump at a constant speed because (depending on what kind of overflow setup you have) you do not want randomness in the amount of water returning to the sump. Changes in return levels can exaggerate noise, cause issues with filter mats or socks and generally be an annoyance or a disaster in waiting.

If you are using it for flow, you can definitely use those modes, but I'm guessing you're using SDC 3.0, so it has to be a small volume. SDC is quite powerful, so that may not really be the right choice for flow.
 
Thanks guys, yes using as a return pump, was intrigued why these modes would be on a return pump as like you guys are saying you want consistent flow. But, I didn't realize people also use them for flow so that makes sense.

Just coz... it's a DC pump. I'm guessing they wanted to throw it in as an easter egg. See how many get it ;)

water goes down the drain at a certain speed, so the pump has to push water up the drain at the same speed to match. If the flow is variable, then how to match the flow going down the drain? Thats why we leave it on constant.

The pump is to return water to the display tank, and we use powerheads to create water movement in the display tank

The chart is on the Sicce website.

The setting will no be linear so you will have to adjust to your needs. One of my pumps when at 100% is 330 gph and I run it at 24% and get 200 gph. It all depends on your plumbing.

The total head will be the height plus the friction losses
