Synthetic Coral Replicas- Safe?

I want to make some magnetic rock shelves.. ok, my dad does (he saw the price of it at the ARRE and said paying that much is stupid, and I agreed).

He said he found "synthetic coral replicas".. and I think he means the ones that goes into aquariums and earth magnets.

Would these be safe to use in a reef tank?

I'm weird about those, others will chime in soon. As in earth magnets, I wouldn't without them being completely solid state inside acrylic.
