t5 ho placement

have a new 8 bulb ho t5 light setup coming and was wondering how high above the water line do you need to place the light fixture. im switching from 3x250w mh bulbs my tank is 30" deep and 30" wide. not sure if they have to be 12" like my mh or can be put right on the waterline. ty for any advise

Start at 12 to 15" and work your way down if possible... I have seen them 2" off the water but it will cook some stuff if you don't acclimate the tank to it first... Hth..

If funds allow I would swap the bulbs out
For ati bulbs... Much better color and par..
