T5s in 2025 (almost 2026)

I still use T5’s for my peak photoperiod, I love them, such a different look from the ramp up and ramp down of the only LEDs. I like the LED too but the middle of the day when all the lights are on is beautiful. And even though I’m only about six months in on this particular bill I have coral growing in areas that are pretty shaded. I really like the Giesman T5 bulbs

I’ll never shy away from using all 3, as long as I have access to supplies to keep them going. By my calculations, I have enough T5 bulbs to do my combo (KZ white ATI blue) for about 20 years. I only have 2 back up Aquatic Life fixtures. I need to start looking into non-dimmable versions (I have both, not a fan of the dimmable versions). For me, this tri-spec hybrid approach is the perfect balance for my SPS reef. Don’t ask me about my electric bill though. I had to, literally have a 125 amp utility pulled for my fish room. Lights use a ton of amps for many many hours a day, then there is my chiller. For example, it’s offline waiting for a part. My utility bill dropped $400 the first month it was offline.

T5s, halides and the XR30s (at 100% all channels) run for 9.5 hours a day. Then blues for 5 hours.

 
Im currently deep in the rabbithole (and decending) of choosing the best lighting for my SPS dominant reef. Dimensions are 66" long x 34" wide x 30" tall. The tank currently has 4 Kessil A360w. My inital thought was to add 2 T5 80w retrofit kits of 2 bulbs each (4 bulbs total). Total inital investment of about $600. Not too bad...

Next I found an 8 bulb 6' ATI Powermodule (T5/LED hybrid) available locally for a decent price ($800). Lots of bulbs and lots of heat/energy/bulb replacement cost. Could always run only 4-6 of the bulbs at a given time.

Then I started considering simply adding more LEDs and forgo the T5s all together. Possibly 3 Radion G6 pros in between the 4 Kessils. Better yet, some ATI Strattons or even some Orpheks. ATI had the flex the could span the length of my tank.

So, to get back on topic... what is the practicality of T5s in 2025? It seems bulb availability may be an issue at times. ATI no longer offters their actinic. The blue plus is currently out of stock almost everywhere I look for the 60" bulbs.

Can todays best LEDs out perform T5s even in the shading aspect? I hope to have nice size acro colonies where this can be an issue.

Money is always a deciding factor. With that said, I want to buy once and buy the best. The growth/health/coloration of corals is the priority. Will 4 80w T5s and 4 kessils be enough to achieve success in a 30" deep tank? Should I ditch the kessils all together for a wall of Orpheks? Maybe a Powermodule with Kessils on the sides/down the middle? 3 Radions and 4 Kessils? Strattons and Kessils? Should I attempt to harness the power of the sun with mirrors and parabolic lenses? Nuclear reactor type setup? As you can see, Im all over the place. Need some real world, recent experiences to make my decision. Help me cook this tank!

I have an ati system. Beautiful things ain't they ? Not on a tank now as recently moved and don't have 4 foot plus tank but I still walk past it in the spare room and wish it was in use :)

Thats actually crazy how bad they deteriorated! My tank is braced just like yours so thats definitely a concern. I have a 4 bulb aquaticlife t5 hybrid on my 57 figi cube with two radion xr15 pros in the middle. Ballasts went out on the t5 and in a short time it became apparent that the T5s were doing the heavy lifting PAR wise. Once those corals get a taste of the T5 juice nothing else will do! Lol
Having grown weed for decades it's a similar story really, plants are just better under hot uneconomic hps, despite commercially we are are led lol
 
Wow! Is great to see there still a lot of love for the T5s. I went on this rabbit whole last year. It gets pretty expensive to over power the T5s and even then "upgrade" is questionable with all the UV and infrared jazz. I am sticking to the T5s for a little longer. Like they said I was thinking Helix and I am also interested on what Tulio will come up with with reef brite.
 
Already plenty of love for T5s here, but I haven't seen any specific recommendations that are actually available for a 60 inch situation. I love T5s and wouldn't run any tank without them plus LEDs, but that's just my preference. Below is a picture of my old tank grown under T5s as well as my current much more modest Red Sea 250G2. If I were starting a tank today I would buy a Giesemann Aurora:

LED can pop the color of coral unlike any t5 can do. As far as the spread, my understanding is that it’s tough to beat t5 on that front, though LED bars can be pretty close.

I wouldn’t go back to t5 just because I can achieve the same or better par from my led bars and the color pop on my sps (walt disney for example) and of course, zoanthids.

Some people that have sps only tanks don’t need that distinct pop and depending on the coral, enjoy the look of it over led only. Blue plus t5 is an attractive bulb but I am seeing colors in my colors that i didnt see when i had my ati sunpower up. I also blended t5 and led and only noticed the pop when t5 went off in the evening

I personally believe that LED's leave a lot to be desired from a coral's standpoint. Sure LED's can grow corals just fine, its been proven time and time again, I have no arguments that it can't grow corals. My thought process takes me down a completely different route. Maybe its just splitting hairs at this point, maybe its the itch to understand why there seems to be a difference in accountable experience through anecdotal evidence, but in the end I think there is something left on the table in terms of the health of our corals.

When you talk to people who've been in this hobby for decades, you hear first hand accounts that Metal Halides and T5's grew corals faster and healthier than LED's ever have for those people. Some of this can certainly be chalked up to how easy/difficult LED's can be set up, but I believe there is more to it than that.

So lets think about the question, why would T5's and Metal Halides be any different?

I have a feeling that if you put a frag of the same coral under the same water conditions and same par where one frag is under a Metal Halide or T5 light, and the other is under a LED light, you'd not only see better growth, but healthier tissue from the coral under the T5 or Metal Halide light. This is an experiment that I'd love to try one day. I'd love to start experimenting and plan on building out a small area in my house for this specific reason. I hope sometime in 2026 I'll be able to start a few experiments.


If you ask me, I'd expect this outcome due to the simple fact that Metal Halide and T5 lights create such a broad spectrum of light versus LED diodes only creating specific frequencies. I know there are studies out there that prove corals use two or three specific wavelengths of light for energy, but my theory is that due to modifiers in the water such as water clarify, shading, ect, that these wavelengths get modified to a certain degree thus affecting the efficiency of the energy process of the corals. I also believe that the can be an argument made for the other spectrums of light helping the countless other organisms that live within our aquariums. I believe a healthy aquarium must be comprised of a healthy eco system, not just the fish and corals. I think its ill-considered to think that other organisms within our aquarium do not have any affect on our corals.

As far as spread, I think the hobby is starting to see the lack of spread from an LED standpoint as an argumentative point as to why T5 and Metal Halide's were just regarded as an all around easier lighting solution to aquariums. Due to this, I think we have and will continue to see improvements to LED fixtures in this area which really does help to bridge the gap between these new LED fixtures and Metal Halide and T5 fixtures. I just think that at the end of the day, LED's will always fall short of the mark set by Metal Halides and T5's because there just isn't a way to fully replicate a full spectrum light source with LEDs.

Another point that I wish to explore more through metal halides is the infrared light spectrums given off by these fixtures. But that's another discussion for another time.

Even if we were to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that corals grow faster, are healthier, and generally “do better” under halides/T5s, it won’t make a bit of difference. Halides and T5s are dead technologies. No company in this hobby is going to build them again in mass and the hobby is never going to accept or go back to them.

ATI has already discontinued multiple bulbs which means Giesemann is right behind unless they find a new manufacturer. Which would likely have to be a Chinese company and we’ve already seen plenty of Chinese bulbs on the market over the years. The current Chinese halides are junk compared to Radiums and halides of the past.

Those of us that have run all of them almost entirely agree that halides and T5 just “did it better” but it matters not. They don’t sell and I don’t see any company spending millions and millions of dollars to try and produce and market them. Multiple companies in this industry are barely hanging on. They don’t have the pocketbooks to try and raise halides/T5s from the dead

You're right! It is a dying technology that as much as we wish we could keep it alive, we can't. But you're assuming my goal is to prove LED's are inferior to Halides or T5's, but the reality is that isn't my goal at all.

Lets say someone does a test and proves that the full spectrum of light is the main difference between halides/T5's and Leds, what would happen with that knowledge then? Does the hobby trend back towards those types of light fixtures? I don't think so, as you said yourself, they are dying technologies. I think the more probable and actual outcome of an experiment like this is to further the hobby and to push to the next "phase" if you will, of lighting in the hobby. Experiments like these are what will continue to push the major companies of these hobbies to innovate and improve upon things like lighting within our hobby. We've seen it with the BRS light testing from Ryan and Randy. I don't think its coincidental that their testing concluded that a blanket of light is better for corals compared to a single spotlight and all of a sudden you see products like the Neptune Sky, ATI Stratons, Phillips Coral Care and others pop up or gain more popularity. Then you start to see major players like Ecotech redesign their lenses to better improve light spread. It would be a mistake to think that their testing and what they found didn't change our hobby. Unfortunately, you don't see any of these big named companies doing experiments trying to understand why lighting from 15 years ago is regarded almost unanimously to be superior in terms of growth and health of the animals. I think if you could answer this question, you'd see a huge leap forward in our hobby. Its not only interesting to think and talk about, but incredibly exciting to picture what lights even just 5 years from now could be/look like.
 
Ok so I ended up going with the T5 retrofit kits from LET. Two kits with 2 bulbs each for a total of 4 80w bulbs. I also scored 3 used AI Hydra 32HDs from my LFS that closed after 22yrs in buisness (sad).

So in total I'll be running the (4) Kessel 360Ws, (3) Hydra 32s and the (4) 80w T5s. Ill be interested to see what kind PAR Ill see and how the spread is. My inital plan is to run the T5s minimally and let the LEDs do most of the work. We'll see if that ends up being the way it works out.

I just ordered all Blue plus bulbs for now. Might add a coral plus or purple in there down the road. Id like to throw a true actinic in there but ATI no longer makes them. Geissman offers an actinic that I'm considering. Anyone have particular recommendations for bulb combinations and/or programs/schedules for the LEDs? Theres a lot going on so some experimenting will be needed Im sure.

Ill post up some pics once I get it all installed. Off to Home Depot I go!

I think Ryan and BRS had more pull than anyone else may ever have again. But panel lights were already being made before their studies. They just proved they were superior and they sold better. Even then people are still buying spotlight style lights like crazy. AI Prime and Kessil as 2 examples.

They weren’t asking for technology that didn’t exist though. LEDs can not replicate halides or T5s 1:1. I doubt we ever see that as the technology and light produced is just not the same.

Either way, it would be cool to watch and see what happens

that’s an interesting point you make. When I had a 250 watt MH over my tank years ago, i was pretty amazed at the growth I was getting. At the time, LED was only beginning to come to fruition.

Same with t5. Impressive growth but not as impressive as MH. Also- i enjoy that point source shimmer that MH provided.

Time will tell whether my new led bars will deliver. I think we will see some great improvements in years to come as you mention. I came pretty close to getting an ATI stratton but I didn’t see enough data to be able to justify the purchase.

I’m chalking up my decent sps growth right now to kalk, weekly water changes, and abundant testing and feeding.
