Hello all,

New to the page, new to reefs, but well researched and we’ve hired help

Our goal for the tank is straight forward, bring a piece of Okinawa back into our home after living there many years ago. Spent a lot of time at Maeda Point and Sunabe Seawall in 05-06. I hear Maeda is terribly overcrowded now and the reef has suffered. Started this project by reaching out to the LFS (ABC Reef, Syracuse) who helped us get the custom sized tank, all the hardware, install it, etc. It was important for us to get this set up right the first time instead of adding piece by piece as problems arise. Currently finishing the cycle and fighting evaporation/salinity problems while we get a top cut for the refugium.

Specs:
24x24x36, ~90g tank (yes, we know tall tanks are harder to clean)
75g refugium (located below in the basement)
Radion XR30 Blue
Vortech MP40 QD (x2)
Reef Octopus Classic 202S skimmer

Current Stock:
Ocelaris x2

As for what goes inside, we’ve been sourcing information from a few websites, YouTube videos, other builds we found online, and our own recollection of things we saw. Trying to balance the pet trade‘s availability, prioritizing captive bred, and still remaining true to the biotope is a bit of a challenge.

http://marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=sourcedetails&id=350703 (a complete list of soft corals is actually hard to find. This study was only for Octocorallia)

We have come up with this ”possibilities list” for quick reference, but all subject to change. The long term goals are Mandarins and LPS/SPS. Starting with Ocellaris and Chromis next week-ish

FISH
Mandarin dragonet
Clown goby
Engineer goby
Dinah’s Goby
Orange spotted goby
Steinitz Prawn Goby
False Clownfish
Fire dartfish
Striped blenny
Amethyst anthias
Blue green chromis
Starck’s Damsel
Yellow Flanked Fairy Wrasse (tank may be too narrow)

INVERT
Crocea clam
Strawberry conch
Banded coral shrimp
Scarlet cleaner shrimp
Pompom crab
Electric blue hermit crab
Tuxedo urchin
Choc chip starfish

CORAL
Acropora (69 different types are known there)
Birds Nest (seriatopora hystrix)
Zoanthid (Kuroshio, giganticus, sansibaricus, mutuki, tuberculosa)
Montipora (34 different types know there)
Turbinaria peltata
Blastomussa
Xenia
Euphyllia (hammer, frogspawn, torch)
Bubble coral (Plerogyra sinuosa)

So that’s where we are so far.

They’ve been great! We’re an hour north of Syracuse and their willingness to drive up and help set everything up has saved us a ton of headache.
