Hey everyone

I added a sunburst / fathead anthias to my display and it is being chased around by my blue eye kole tang . The tang was a model citizen before the new addition. Any simple way to deal with this? I haven’t seen the anthias eat in the display tank... it gets chased into corners and then it just disappears into the rock works.

This is him hiding between the glass and magnet cleaner.

I got a 30 x 30 x 30 90g cube, there is plenty of swimming space and hiding spots.

Excuse my bad pictures, just to illustrate the real estate situation.

Currently in the tank along with the sunburst and kole tang are a midas blenny and pair of clowns. A73D845E-B13C-495E-A0D7-4E6B62624E29.jpeg A646BF98-F978-48E4-90A8-7ADFE2F90ED4.jpeg

Usually the aggression will die down but sometimes it takes time. Do you have an acclimation box? If you do I would add the anthias to it and let it stay in there for a few days. You could also try the mirrior on the tank trick or the photo of another tang taped to the glass trick. Anything to get the tang to leave the new addition alone. Acclimation boxes are worth their weight in gold!

Now I see why people would need acclimation boxes...ordering one as we speak.

Let's see if we can get you a quick solution here while you wait on the one you ordered to be delivered!

I would put the tang in the acclimation box (or into a QT tank) for a couple days. Move some rocks around as it looks like you don't have a lot of coral at this point.

I tried catching the tang to move it to a different tank temporarily but catching it was impossible. I haven’t seen the anthias since yesterday, which I’m pretty bummed about. I guess acclimation box is a must next time.

Anthias hide well
This aggression should quickly go away. The color of the fish I believe got the tangs attention.
You could place a mirror outside the tank facing the area where the tang hides and it will quickly divert its attention to the new imaginary tang

This is a good suggestion - doing a little re-aquascaping can change up the tangs perception of what his territory is. You'll also want to ensure the Anthias has plenty of 'safe-spaces' available until hes comfortable in the tank. That strategy has worked well for me in freshwater and marine setups in the past.
