Probably the small temporary quarters. I have had several different tangs getting along swimmingly with foxface. In my current setup my scopas was in about 2 months before the foxface. The first day was a bit of chasing back and forth but today they swim side by each even rubbing cheeks at the nori clip. Space is key I believe.

My tomini and foxface get along pretty well. The foxface went in after the tomini, but was a bit larger. Today they are about 4" and 5" respectively so still a bit young, and are in a 120 so they have more space. However, much of the time they are hanging out near each other.

I would leave the foxface in the QT, then introduce both at the same time to the 125 when it's ready. They should be fine together in the 125.

Yeah I wouldn't attempt to keep those two together in a 40 even short term. Tangs can be very territorial to any fish with a similar diet.

Tank is Literally days old.
Add the live rock from the breeder and your good to put them in.

Happy reefing.

Edit: if the live rock in the breeder can support the fish now in the 40 then they will in the 125. It's the bac count not the size of tank/water.

I have 2 yellows, a gem, a hippo, a two spot bristletooth, and a PBT and all get along famously with my foxy. My gem and the foxface would yell at each other when I first introduced the foxface to the tank. Now they eat off the tongs and the clip together. I do think your tank size is affecting behavior. Hopefully once you transfer to the 125 they’ll be great together.
