Very nice morning beach walk.

Yes all the sponge is gone but I had to severely trim the corals to eliminate it so the corals are slowly returning.

The Gorgonians were the worst.

What are some of the best things you have found in those tide pools

Hello PaulB from long island im from smithtown originaly
we use to collect sea horses in peconic bay for our tanks.
as kids we scuba on barges and wrecks planted by the Stonybrook college biology division
off of cranes neck and north shore beaches.
Being old we use to hunt quail in stonybrook
i lived in old wyandanch hunt club before it became caleb smith state park.
I loved life when America was free.

Brad the tide pools behind my house I rarely find to many interesting things except this half eaten shark.

Plenty of horseshoe crabs, that I rescue and throw back in the water before they become seagull lunch.

This cool ray who I placed back in the water as he was still alive and well.

Amphipods

But the bast tide pools were in the western Sound about 60 miles west of here.

There I would collect these cool creatures.

Hello Uncle Gilbert. I am also old and have been SCUBA diving in the Sound since about 1974. My friend and dive partner had our own boats and equipment and would go for lobsters. We would get the most lobsters at night.

Sea horses we collect near Oak Beach on the south shore. I used to raise them. Here the female is depositing the eggs in the male's pouch in my reef.

I am living next to the Sound in Baiting Hollow next to Riverhead and also loved it when America was free but we can't talk about that here. :anguished-face:

Here we are picking out "modern" diving equipment in Key Largo.

I have an idea for a TV show. Instead of the NEWS stations telling you the forecast for the weather today and tomorrow, I think I would like to make a station that tells you yesterday and last weeks weather. This way, no one can complain because it will always be correct. :)

This morning at almost sunrise I went down to the beach armed with a bucket to collect amphipods. I knew it would be a very low tide.
But nothing. Not one amphipod where there should have been millions. This is scary because after the amphipods are gone, whose next?

I did see many invasive Japanese shore crabs and tiny eels but thats it.

I did swirl algae and barnacle covered rocks in my bucket of seawater just for the bacteria and hopefully baby amphipods.
I will take this water/mud and strain it in a rotifer filter to at least get some bacteria. Later, if I get time, I will put it under a microscope tosee if I got anything.

Oh boy Paul, I do not like to hear this! Scary times we live in.

I see this every late summer/early fall, Paul. Believe they migrate away from the shore. BTW beautiful reef tank.

OOOOhhhhh NNooo. I have way to many fish. Soon they will have to take turns putting their heads in the water. :(

I can't help it, if I see an interesting fish that I hardly, if ever see, I need it.

OMG. I have hair algae but no hair on my head. All my fish look great and want to spawn, but I can't use any more fish.

My corals don't look as good, I think they are jealous of all the fish and don't want to stand up in their full glory. I need a bigger tank so I need a bigger house but I'm to old to get one.

I am going on my beach walk now so I hope I don't find a baby swordfish or horseshoe crab because I know I will put them in my tank.

This made me laugh, I can almost pictures a newb asking if a baby swordfish will live in thier AIO cube

I always wanted a baby dolphin, you think he will be fine in a 180g tank? I plan on upgrading to 400g tank in a couple years..

Dolphins are really cool but I think the newborns are as big as your 180 gallon tank.

You can keep newborn swordfish in a tank but I would imagine they are jumpers and will outgrow any tank in a few weeks. :anguished-face:
