I built my sump and my system has been running for a few weeks.

However, the drain section of my sump is turbulent. I'd like to diffuse the drain water somehow and reduce splashing.

This is a 150 with a 30g sump on a lower floor

Any ideas?

Frank, I find your post a bit confusing.

"...the drain section of my pump is turbulent ." Do you mean the area where the water is going into your sump, or the area around your return pump, or the area where you are draining the water out of the main tank?

"This is a 150 with a 30g sump on a lower floor " So the 150g tank is on one floor and the 30g sump is on a lower floor (like 12' below the tank)?

Is the drain exit into the sump have a filter sock? That would calm things down considerably. Is the exit above the water level in the sump? If so, try extending it so the exit is just below the water level.

Thank you for your response

Yes, it is about 12' down

My tank has two internal overflow boxes.

I have a durso style drain/overflow in each box.

I am considering a separate drain chamber/mini sump in addition to my main sump. I am also considering using only one of the overflow boxes for draining purposes. BY using one, I should be able to get a very quiet herbie overflow working.

Creating a strong bulwark: Did you consider floor support for your reef tank?
