I'm brand new to this and just completed setting up my first aquarium, a Nyos Opus 300 G2. Everything is going good so far, but the sock filter component doesn't seem right. The acrylic plate that sits on top doesn't sit flush and some water coming in goes through the gap instead of through the sock. Also the sock itself doesn't sit well and some water bypasses it through the edge.

I get the impression it's not a big deal, but wondering if I'm just doing something wrong.

Not a big deal, in my opinion, but you may be able to find a shorter sock that fits that sump a little better. You may also wish to replace the sock with a media cup, and then run Poly-Fil (filter floss) instead of socks. Or jst go with no mechanical filtration at all, as some do 🙂

Good luck!

I agree that finding a shorter filter sock or using filter cups with polyfil/filter floss is a good option. I use short socks in my system, but always wanted to try the cups.

A little water getting through isn’t an issue. I’d be willing to bet that most systems running socks get a little water going through unless you have a sump where the pipe actually exits inside the sock.
The mesh sock you have will work, even if it touches the bottom. It just means it’ll hold more “stuff” before needing to be changed. I use mesh socks when I run them, usually after stirring the sandbed…which to be honest is not very often.
I am a believer that filter socks take out a lot of the fine particles that corals can consume. I know many people who don’t use any mechanical filtration as well.

I tend to use just a little Poly-Fil for mechanical. I do know that Josh Earle from World Wide Corals does not run any mechanical at all. In a WWC video, I once heard Josh say that you should take everything your filter sock catches, and add it back into your tank 🙃

we use 100,s of socks and 1 or 2 out of every 100 the plastic is just a hair larger, preventing a full seal.

We like to have a full seal with socks so we just toss out the ones that don’t fit well.

I think you'll be fine. I've been known to let mine overflow before cleaning them. I have a pair of fleece rollers in my 100g SPS tank and I'll shut the rollers down a few nights a week and let them overflow. I think the coral appreciated it. I don't want to strip the water just catch some of the particulate so the tank is fairly clear. I've never tried to achievement crystal clear water and don't really think it's healthy for corals but that JMO

Absolutely agree!
Allan @coral reeftank has some of the best acros out there and he doesn’t run any mechanical filtration. Salem has spoken about this as well.

Don't worry about it, I never had a filter sock although I do wear socks. Even bowling balls will get by my filter, which I don't even have. 😎

as others have stated, not a big deal. I’ve seen people on here who don’t run mechanical filtration like socks and they have awesome looking tanks

Paul!
You are a legend in my eyes sir! Keeping it simple for all these years! Hats off to you my friend
