Saw a royal dottyback at the LFS and it was love at first site (speaking only for myself, I have no reason to believe it was mutual for the fish :p ). Beautiful fish. The thing I liked about the Royal Dottyback was that it would allow me to get exotic, colorful fish even in my small tank. Much more striking than a Royal Gramma, for example.

I'll soon be putting livestock in my 33 gallon cube (16 gallon sump, with skimmer). BTW, since clowns seem to be assumed: I don't plan to put anything that would host a clown fish and although they're ok, I dislike the way clownfish swim, so no Nemo in this tank.

I realize that the Royal Dottyback is a terror, rules out shrimp, etc.. Thing is, I believe that's quite alright for this tank.

But I don't want a single fish tank (some people apparently consider this a good fish to keep by itself, it's so aggressive, reportedly). Ideally I will have 3 - 4 fish, but certainly at least 2 fish.

What else can I put this Royal beast with?

Note that I do have a lot of pukani rock with a largish cave structure near the sand bed.

I am also rather taken with Azure Damsels (sort of, it was on my list before seeing the Dottyback). Would they stand up to each other adequately? Other ideas?

I'm not really interested in a more mild tempered Dottyback. The Royal really did it for me.

Thanks in advance.
