We have neglected our tank for quite some time and now I would like to clean it up and get it going correct again. What is the best way to clean my rock? Any other suggestions? Our tank is embarrassing at this point.

  1. Prepare new water for a water change.
  2. Clear the glass of all algae.
  3. Give a healthy scrubbing to the rock while in the tank.
  4. Give a good stir to the water in the tank to get all of the algae suspended in the water column.
  5. Do a water change.
  6. Swear an oath of weekly 20% water changes and husbandry.

the bacteria will not be killed by cleaning, see this thread of 6 deep cleans, and no bottle bac used, and no ammonia testing:

that thread is solely dedicated to fixing up aged tanks. it's done all at once, in one day's time. each tank was much worse than yours, yours will be easy comparatively. study each example, takes 20 mins to see how to clean your tank + never have it invaded by any organism, once you get it cleaned.
