Phytoplankton, the reason there is LIFE ON THE PLANET. Yes you owe your life as does every living creature on the planet. Really? Yes! Phytoplankton is the first link in the food chain. Single cell plants which is the smallest food source on the planet, without which the entire chain would dissolve.

But there is more! Phytoplankton is responsible for the production of 50-80% of the planet's oxygen. So not only would the world starve but it would suffocate as well.

Even more exciting is what phytoplankton does for our tiny slices of the ocean we keep in our little glass boxes. Within the aquarium, live phytoplankton performs an abundance of functions enhancing almost everything in our tanks. This starts with feeding nearly every living organism in our tanks.

Filter feeders such as clams, scallops, feather dusters, Christmas Tree worms all benefit from the presence of live phytoplankton.

Crustaceans including copepods, shrimp, crabs and more gain nutrition filtering phytoplankton through their gills or directly eating it. The presence of live phytoplankton enhances copepod health and reproduction, and we highly recommend dosing live phytoplankton for at least a month after adding new copepods.

Corals benefit from consistent dosing of live phytoplankton. SPS consume phyto and certain strains have been shown to enhance coloration. Red strains such as Rhodomonas, Pophyridium and others deepen or enrich red coloration as an example. NPS rely on phytoplankton in nature as their main food source. While there are other commercial food sources available, live phytoplankton is the most natural option, and doesn’t add any additives and preservatives. LPS corals, while not necessarily eating phytoplankton, absorb its nutrients through their skin as it becomes entangled in their slime coat.

Phytoplankton not only feeds our inhabitants, but it also performs a vital function in water chemistry. Live phytoplankton is the best all natural method of nutrient export. Phytoplankton consumes nitrates and phosphates throughout its life cycle. Again without any unnecessary additives and preservatives.

We offer three unique PHYTOPLANKTON BUFFETS each targeted towards very specific goals in your aquariums.

PHYTO BUFFET is our custom blend of 17 unique strains of live phytoplankton. Why so many when our competition blends 3-5? As our business grew we began to need more phytoplankton than we we’re currently culturing. Through our research we found that although many strains are similar, in aquaculture we found that certain processes, whether raising shrimp, clams or other animals, certain strains were used exclusively in certain applications due to size, shape or nutritional profile. For this reason we broadened our offering vs culturing duplicates of the same strains.

PHYTO BUFFET EXTREME is our proprietary product where we use a cell safe method to produce a concentrated blend of our 17 strains, gaining nearly 2x the cell concentration of our standard buffet. We developed and recommend this for customers with large tanks, allowing them to get the same results while storing 1/2 as much product. We also recommend this product for SPS tanks as we receive great feedback regarding SPS corals showing a feeding response at the time of adding it.

PHYTO BUFFET CORAL DELIGHT is our proprietary blend that is limited to our Gold, Brown and Red strains. We first produced this blend for culturing our Parvocalanus copepods as the green strains attach to them and cause them to sink and suffocate, combined with the higher nutritional content required for these high performance copepods. Further study lead us to learn of a number of benefits from this targeted product. Our red strains will increase the intensity of the red coloration in corals. The browns (diatoms) will help to reduce the available real estate for Dinos, especially if used in conjunction with silicate. And the higher protein and HUFA (highly Unsaturated Fatty Acids) makes this blend a high power premium rocket fuel for our tanks.
