Thought I'd start my own thread to avoid cluttering up gooch's, if you have any questions or are in want of some dart frogs (I'm working with 16 species right now, only some are pictured), let me know.

NOTE - I keep ALL of my species separate, hybridizing and mixed enclosures are very frowned upon in the dart frog hobby for various reasons.... I won't get into them here, but if you search "mixing" on any dart frog forum, there are plenty of threads with summaries of the reasons not to.

New frogroom... still in progress, but it's getting there

WOW! Nice forest floor...talking about matching the hatch....they look very happy.

Thanks, the leaf litter allows you to seed the tanks with microfauna (springtails, isopods... technically, some of the smallest living macrofauna, but the hobby rolls with micro to make things easy ;)), they self-sustain in-viv as supplemental food sources, and keep the frogs actively hunting... pretty much the land equivalent of copepods/amphipods. Without the leaves, the frogs just decimate the microfauna populations. The litter also make the frogs bolder, even some of the shyer species will grow some cajones when given that many crevices to jump into if they feel threatened.

Do you by chance know the stewarts?

I've been to Sean's barn a few times to pick up frogs and check out the AMAZING chondros he has, chatted with him a couple of times about frog-related stuff, but wouldn't say I *know* him. Why do you ask?

Nice stuff. You are an artist with the way you scape your vivs. I hope to one day be able to get my system looking that nice. I have a product I want to eventually introduce into that hobby but I need to be more experienced with the frogs and the hobby. My viv has a few pieces I made. Thing is I made them all a year or two ago and I have progressed with my work to the point where this isn't a fair representation of what I am capable of. I have been playing off and on with more freshwater stuff. When I move to my next shop I will have a little showroom with a variety of set ups. My vision for my dart frog tank is gonna be so sweet. It'll be a few years before that happens but it will be fun once I get there.

Those are awesome!! Your set up looks great and the pics are amazing! Thanks for sharing!

I just figured if you had set-ups like that and how close you are to them you probably knew of them. I have never been to the Barn, but hear great things. I work with Chondros and just got one of their HB Biak kids, great guys.

Very cool! Ive always wanted dart frogs and my son has been on me wanting some as well. Those geckos are sweet as well. This makes me want to do some homework to find out more about them and see if there care would fit into are lives. As much as I like them I wouldnt get them if I could care for them correctly. Could you recommend some good sites I could find good info on as far as setting up a tank for them and there care?

AMAZING! I love the colors and the combinations of those dart frogs. Are you feeding them fruit flies? What do they eat?

Thanks for sharing the great pics and your other hobby. I have kept salamander newts and mudskippers in the past in a tank with land/water but never frogs other than raising some tadpoles and letting them go.

Thanks, but you overrate me... there are some incredible viv designers in the hobby, I am definitely not one of them at this point. My strength is in keeping the frogs themselves in good shape and producing healthy offspring, that's where my main successes have been. I will say that my design/build skills have definitely improved 100X over time, but there are some AMAZING tanks out there that I could never even hope to create. I appreciate the kind words.

Yeah, wingless fruit flies, isopods, springtails, and bean beetles for the larger frogs/small geckos.... all of which I culture at home, they're a breeze and don't smell like crickets do.

Just picked up two new pairs today, with two more species on the way:
-Ranitomeya imitator "cainarachi valley"
-R. imitator "Tarapota"

Next week:
-Oophaga pumilio "Blue Jeans" (the "Planet Earth"/"Life" frog)
-Ranitomeya benedicta (coolest looking frogs I think I've seen to date)

Really cool hobby r u more into frogs or reefs?? Can u tell us more about the matinance / equipment / cost compared too reef tank?
How many frogs can u keep in a 20 gal

Beautiful!

I am in the planning stages on a viv for my Brazilian rainbow boa. I have only found a few good sites for constriction, design, etc. Any input on where to look for ideas?

I have a few darts, not nearly as many as you though. They are cool creatures. I picked mine up form Jane Brown @ Under the Canopy. Great place to deal with.

More into frogs, at this point I have ~20 vivariums and only two reef tanks. Start-up is the main cost, maintenance and upkeep are VERY low. Tank + lights + hand sprayer (or mist system if you want to automate) is really the only equipment you need, the frogs do best at room temperatures (80+ for extended periods will kill them). The cost for one viv is FAR lower than a reef tank of the same size..... but they're addicting as all getout and so easy that it's hard to keep just one :)

As for the 20 gallon question, it really depends on the species, the average would be 2-3, but certain species have same-sex aggression and do best in pairs. I would NOT recommend putting more than one species in one tank, there are various issues that come into play including hybridization/stress & aggression/exposure to novel pathogens/competition for food and breeding sites, among others.

Beautiful!

Dendroboard has a pretty good number of how-to's and build threads, definitely a good place to start.
