So after a disastrous fail last time. I've decided to get back into the hobby. Figured this would the best way to keep a journal of all the happenings in my tank. The primary goal with this tank is to learn about water chemistry though observation instead of relying on test kits.

Equipment

  • Aquclear 70 HOB with media kit
  • Petco Bookshelf 7.7 Gallon aquarium (May say screw it and buy a nice glass one
    laugh.png
    )
  • Petco Freshwater T-5 (Replacing with Mars Aqua reef LED)
  • Fuvel 50 watt heater
  • 8 lb of Live rock
  • Petco glass in-tank thermometer
Livestock

  • Pulsating Xenia (waiting for weed like growth
    rolleyes.gif
    )
  • Random long stock Xenia
  • Pineapple Sponge
Wishlist

  • Nice bigger glass tank
    wub.png
  • Aquarium controller (may turn raspberry pi into one)
  • Full testkit
  • some dosing chems (though will see how weekly water changes fair)
  • Fish
  • GSP
  • Some Monti
  • Zoa's
  • Some shrimp
  • Maybe a tiny fish
Proposed Maintenance

  • bi-weekly water changes of 1 gallon each (too much or too little)
  • daily top-off
  • daily feeding w/ flakes
  • weekly cleaning of deterius
  • once a week frozen mysis
(3/24/16) Tank is still cycling. Waiting for LED light to come in. Xenia is actually pulsating and seems really happy under freshwater light. Did a quick test, still haven't detected ammonia, nitrate spikes. Maybe using cured rock from

running tanks has essentially cycled the tank?

GOOD NEWS:

So quite a few big updates. First got rid of the old tank and replaced it with a mr.aqua 12 gallon and started running GFO. I love not seeing algae anymore. I also got a nice frag pack consisting of a few zoa, one acro, some kind of encrusting arco and two purple gorg. They all seem to have settled down and seem happy. Also got a emerald crab to eat some of hair algae. He seems to be really going at it as i saw quite a bit of it disappear over the last few weeks. Feeding has also decreased from twice a day to twice a week with random flakes throughout the week.

SAD NEWS:

Looks like the crab got really hungry and ate one of the small snails. No wonder my params were all over the place. Bird of paradise didn't make it through shipping. Also #### algae. I cant seem to stop it from growing all over the glass. Driving me insaneeeee. Fish also jumped out and didn't make it :(

Welcome, I love your tank, I had their 8 gallon and then almost bought the 12 gallon but decided to go bigger. Looking forward to following your progress.:)

Haha. Thank you! I'm pretty excited too. So far i've spotted a worm, a brittle star fish, and tiny little pods on my glass. Also I fed my acan for the first time a few days ago. Quite a interesting event to see.

Wish I had that biodiversity! I used dry rock. It prevents both bad and good things I guess. [emoji28]

True True. I really do think most of those things were from corals that i mayyyy not have dipped :p
