I am building a 6' long in-wall tank and would like to keep the back glass clean so I can enjoy the tank from the fish room as well as the living room. However, my wife does not want the fish room to be visible from the living room (through the tank). I have been thinking about various ways to make a removable background. What do you all suggest?
- Black vinyl or acrylic panels with velcro or hooks?
- Black roller shades custom made (72" wide x 25" tall)?
- Something else?

I want this very easy to cover and uncover while not being hideously expensive.

First idea, get rid of that wife. I’m sure you could probably upgrade her.

The shade idea is probably the only one, but what about a poster? Maybe some kind of wall Art that she likes? You could even put one facing out, and one facing in. The one facing in could be a coral or fish poster.

Update in case anyone sees this: I bought the shade and I love it. Cost $95 shipped (price high because it's 72" wide x 52" tall) and was easy to install. It works perfectly. I get a nice black background whenever I want, and a view into the tank from the fish room whenever I want.

Interesting solution. Thanks for the follow-up. I like the ability to easily raise it and see the tank for maintenance from the back.

$95 roller shade is a lot cheaper than half of everything. Plus, she allowed you to get a 6’ long in-wall tank; Hard to upgrade on that.

My wife is a quilter and she used fabric to back ours, it is just hanging from the top, easy to remove, throw in the washer if dirty.
