Test Kit

Hi all! I have been using an API test kit since I started in January but I am growing skeptical of my results and looking to reinvest in a new kit.

Please tell me your preferred or most accurate. I have considered Hannah testers because it seems easy to interpret but I am very open to what is best.

Loaded question and you’ll get lots of different answers, but for the lower cost I go with Salifert and Red Sea. In case your not aware once these titration agents are opened they should be replaced once a year in my opinion. Hannah are very good just a little more money but are read in numbers instead of colors which can be helpful.

Thank you. I figured some of it is personal preference but I figured there has to be some options that are not API.

Hannah for Alk, Salifert for ca and mag, Red sea for no3 and po4. I do use API for ammonia and nitrite

I use Hanna for alkalinity and phosphate and Salifert for nitrate, calcium and magnesium.

Most parameters can be tested with several test kits. The selection can be situational. It is pretty common for people to have difficulty with discerning the intensity of color in some tests or the exact color end point in some tests. So you will often get very different opinions or preferences for test kits.

Hanna has taken the interpretation out of the process. Almost everyone reports satisfaction with the Hanna alkalinity test. In tanks that do not have much hard coral growth, testing alk is not that crucial. In a tank with quite a bit of coral growth, alk testing is pretty important.

And as far as I know, only the Hanna ULR test is sensitive enough to measure phosphates well in a reef aquarium for low nutrient settings.
