Test kits and coral dips

New to the hobby, I've been using api test kit but been seeing lots of people say it's unreliable. What kit would you suggest?
And as far as parameters go, what parameters have you guys had luck with with keeping the tank happy.

Currently have some snails, sand sifting star, royal Gramma, and zoa frag.

Also what about coral dips? And mixing ratios. I'm pretty sure I have some pest. They look like mini gray starfish.

I think most here like the Salifert brand test kits, they are easy to use and read, and are considered reliable. The Hanna Checkers are also very popular for some tests; you can often find these "used" at a pretty good deal. I believe the Nyos kit for nitrate specifically if well regarded.

If this is a relatively new tank, I would give some thought into rehoming the sand-sifting star. Typically, these animals need a very old, mature, and large sandbed or they very quickly use up the available food, and then slowly starve in most systems.

Coral dips would be a little like asking which Italian grandmother makes the best tomato sauce. I am here with you to see what the R2R gurus think.
