Testing tips- just do it?

Hey all! I need tips, suggestions, community wisdom. How does everyone make sure water testing gets done?

I have my 500 up and running. (Yes, I will update my build... *sigh*) I know my nitrates and phos are low because I'm battling the red/browns (Cyano? Dinos?) but not as bad as when it was new newer. I always SWEAR to myself that I'm going to water test both tanks every _____day (fill in your favorite day of the week). Ok, I SWEAR I'll do it every other week on _____day. Oh, look, drat! It's been a month.....

I'm ready to acknowledge my own weakness and spend $1000 on an auto tester, but can't find one with consistently good reviews.

Please tell me your go-tos to get it done so maybe I'll find one that works for me!!

I test on Sunday morning, the wife likes to sleep in, the house is quiet. I slide a couch up to the tank, set up a tv tray thingy, grab my testing equipment, put some music on at a respectable level and get to it.
I start with a 20% water change, then I test
Nitrate
Phosphate
Calcium
Magnesium
Alkalinity
Salinity
I used to write my parameters in a notebook but now I’m using an app.
I make any adjustments the tank needs, top off ATO, clean glass, clean skimmer etc. Then I put everything away, slide the couch back to where it goes and I’m done

My Apex/Trident tests salinity, PH, ALK, Calcium, and Mg 4 times a day. I only manually test Nitrates and Phosphates once a week using Hanna testers.

That's why I'm considering the Hydros Maven, when they finally perfect and release it.

There is, It's called by an auto tester, haha. I need to get one for my tank because I feel like I forget to test as well (even though I would try to do it once a week)

Sunday is tank day. 4 tanks get tested Sunday mornings. NO3, PO4, and Alk. Calcium maybe once a month since none of mine have shown much fluctuation. Alk can be more frequent especially on my SPS tank since I have to tweak my AFR dosage as sticks (hopefully) grow. I fiddle with something everyday it seems but Sunday was test day when I worked so I've just kept it the same.

This is just my take, and some of it might go against the grain, but here’s how I see it when it comes to auto-testers and staying consistent with water testing.

A lot of folks think once they install an auto-tester, they’re done—no more testing. That’s just not the case. These things still need regular attention. Reagents run out, lines clog, sensors drift, and like any piece of equipment, they can fail without warning. You still need to cross-check the readings with a manual test kit now and then to make sure things are on track. In short, auto-testers are helpful—but they’re not magic. You still have to stay involved.

Testing regularly takes some discipline, but here are a few things that have helped me stay on top of it. First, keep your test kits where you can see them. If they’re tucked away in a cabinet, you’ll forget about them. I keep mine right next to the tank. Just seeing them there is a reminder to run the tests.

Next, build a routine. I use reminders in Apex Fusion, but even a phone calendar works. Tie testing into something you already do—like after a water change. Once it’s part of your routine, it’s just another step, not a chore.

Logging results has been a big one for me. Writing down or logging results makes the process feel worth it. Seeing the trends over time helps me catch issues early, and it’s oddly satisfying to watch the data build up which makes me want to be more consistent.

Lastly, have a backup. Life happens... Make sure someone else—spouse, kid, friend—knows how to do the basics if you’re ever out of town or out of commission. It’s peace of mind.
At the end of the day, you’re the one responsible for keeping your tank stable. Auto-testers can help, but they’re not a substitute for paying attention.

I automated ALK testing and dosing, and to keep alk stable I dose AFR. Then I just test N&P somewhat... not really scheduled.
