Yes. I was playing around with the background film for the Serene lighting. Not sure I like the film I got. The kit's film won't fit the tank and you can't order it by itself.

I would not mess with the tank acrylic. Just on the glass.

The whole back is glass. I just want to be able to see into the overflow area.

Tough choice, on the one hand it's very handy to be able to see into the overflow, on the other hand if you're lighting the back of the frosted glass, the lights might cause all kinds of nasty growth back there...

Maybe end the frosted film on either side of the overflow and do a black vinyl strip to cover the overflow with a tab cut into it so you can remove it when needed?

If you mean from behind so you can see in it - definitely. You will one day want to look in there. I left both of mine unpainted from behind on the 140.
