I have 6 of them on my 6’ 125g tank, so I put them one every foot. Mine is overkill but I was worried about shadowing.

The controller is nearly a necessity. Without it you can’t fully setup the intensity on each channel. I think there is a very basic AB mode without the controller but it’s worth spending the little extra for the controller that everyone complains about.
