The truth about Kleini Butterflyfish?

Is the Blue Head Kleini Butterflyfish a true regional variety and safer than brown/yellow?

Oh and to add to this thread, was at the LFS Thursday. They had two klieni butterflies that ganged up on a tiny clown tang and were picking at him. There was a dead bristletooth they were also picking at… little killers for sure took that tang out and was going after the little clown tang. I would have rescued the little clown tang if I didnt have a sohal already… he is a good sohal and Im not going to tempt fate like that lol. Evil little creatures

That’s a REALLY pretty tank, fyi!! I love these pics. Looks very natural, as if I was snorkeling somewhere tropical. But, it looks like ur more of a softy dominant tank? I mean, obviously I’m not seeing the whole thing, but that may be what helps? Idk. I was actually expecting/hoping he’d eat softies, as I have outa control zoas starting to grow up my main rockwork in the tank he’s in. My zoa gardens are small and far from main structure. But obviously it only takes one polyp to detach n make it over for THAT whole wild fire to start up. My filefish used to love to eat zoas, but now that he’s FAT on frozen foods, he hasn’t even looked at any of my corals in years. The Kleini however, I’ve noticed is EXTREMELY PICKY about what lil morsels he eats from my homemade frozen mixes. I mean, my Mandarins are less picky than he is about eating. So, he’s like the opposite of my filefish… LOVES CORAL SO MUCH that he eats very little frozen food now. When I first got him, he ate everything like a pig. But he found what he likes, n is sticking to it, no matter how often my yellow Tang n I scare him away. This fish is public enemy number 1 for me!! 🐠😈
Mine would eat a dog biscuit if I threw it into the tank. I have mixed reef with SPS.

I completely blame myself…. With a very small portion if blame going out to @vetteguy53081, haha!! No, I am kidding. I just hate myself for choosing a fish strictly by reading so many positive claims/posts by one person alone. I should’ve waited much longer n vetted many more ppl. That all falls on me.

However, I feel I must repeat an earlier post of mine, as I think it’s just so funny (and FRUSTRATING) that when I was younger, w smaller reef tanks too, I’d just grab anything if I thought it looked “awesome”, n STILL never fell into any issues that were NEARLY as bad as the issues n stress this fish has caused me. Maybe the smaller tanks were helping as it was easier to catch the “trouble makers?” But still, I was SOOOOOO RECKLESS back then doing ZERO research before buying stuff, n now I’m so much more cautious…and THIS is when I end up getting the most problematic fish/situation of my entire life? I must’ve done something super horrible in a past life, bc if this isn’t bad karma? Idk what is. 🙃

I had to go back and read what I posted because my intent was not to place blame or say something like dummy. Sorry about that. I should have either not replied or added more substance to it because as I went back to read it today it seems like I was a poo head. Again, sorry.

Wow…Really beautiful!! And u sed u have 3 in 3 different tanks and none of them are eating coral? Or was that someone else? Either way, u must have reeeeeeeally good juju going on for ur Kleini not to see all those pretty little polyps as juicy little steaks. Just goes to show u that every single fish n every tank has its own type of chaos and/or harmony to it. I mean, I’ve heard everyone n their mothers tell absolute horror stories about their filefish, flame angels and Toby puffers, and I’ve always had a few of each, NONE of which were coral killers. Sure, maybe a nip here n there, usually when I’d first get them, but they’ve always completely stopped after the first few weeks of getting fat on my homemade frozen food mixes. I was really hoping the Kleini would be the same. But, he eats EVERYTHING I feed the tank like a pig n STILL completely destroys like 1/4 of a birdsnest every night. I admit, he’s not AS interested in my acros anymore (still takes the occasional nip off them too)… but my gorgonians and birdsnests are going to be completely gone any day now. Oh, and the pocilloporas too (but they’re basically just a less branchy version of birdsnest anyway). I feel so bad for my trapezia’s, lol!! They try so hard to scare him off their home, but he could absolutely care less. When he goes up to the BN’s u’ll see like 12 lil claws all reaching out (as I picture them in my head saying “PLEASE STOP…PLEEEEASE!!!!” 😢)

No sorry needed… I completely agree w ur statement… it is always up to the owner to do their due diligence. I’m usually super cautious. But I let the excitement of hearing about a butterfly that’s not just great for aiptasia control, but is super hardy too, get the better of me and I jumped the gun. Mistakes made are merely lessons learned…and this is one lesson learned that I will NEVER EEVER EVER EVER FORGET!! Lol

OH MY GODDDDD!!!!! I JUST CAUGHT THE LIL *******!!!!!!!! I’m SOOOOO excited/jumping with joy!!!…. Into the sump he goes, n shall live out the rest of his days!! 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌👏😃👏🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌

He’ll still be happy as there’s plenty of aiptasia and sponges for him to eat…. And if he’s a good boy, I’ll throw in some birdsnest branches for him to munch on whenever I prune them, 🤣!

And how did I catch him u ask? Well, I actually just got a new flashlight (one of those MEGA ones that looks like a spotlight when u shine it into the sky) for when I’m walking the dogs to scare away any/all the skunks that live in the park by me that have sprayed my dogs too many times to count. So I used it to shine into the tank from my couch, to see if he was munching more coral, n he went into an almost stunned trance like state (maybe it was blinding him? Idk…but I was able to walk right up to my tank w my longest net n just pull him out easier than any fish I ever had to remove. WOOOOHOOOOOO!!!!!!!! The war has finally ended; peace shall reign again! 😋 oh man, my YT is gonna be so happy too when he wakes up n that lil u know what isn’t in there anymore. 😁

Funny you say that . When diving I had a huge Dcell battery flashlight that did the same thing . At night the fishes I used it on were stunned . Similar to me when driving at night on a two lane road

It was wild… at least it seems I found out a new way to catch any coral killers in the future 🔦🎣🤣

I have a Klein's butterfly in my garage tank. It is all SPS except for aiptasia and rock anemones. He murders both. I am afraid to put it in my main tank that has lots of rock anemones, torches, acans, etc. Unfortunately, the main tank does have lots of aiptasia. I have tried peppermints and nudis with no success (I suspect my wrasses, shrimps, etc eat the nudis). Not sure what to do

I've had mine 14 month. He definitely helps with aiptaisa and gotten better about not nipping at my Acropora with times. I think he sees all the tangs eating fishfood and slowly just became a tang. I have a acan and zoa that he/she never pecks at

First 6 month my Klein was eating acro polyps clean and with aggression. I had to way to capture it. Maybe bc of the coral growth its just hard to notice the impact of the Klein pecking
