Dude me too, fell for it as well. I hated this fish and couldn't get it out without ripping the whole tank up!! no traps, dude was faster than freakin tangs and damsels!! All my fish hated this dude as well, he managed to tick my marine betta off who is the most chill fish Ive ever seen. He came out and chased this butterfly for a solid 3 minutes!! Worst fish ever.
100% what I’ve been going thru too. Worst fish i ever experienced in my life… with 30 years on n off in the hobby/lifestyle. While growing up, I never did ANY research n would just get any fish because it was awesome, n now I’m very cautious, and THIS is when I get the worst fish ever? I’m pulling my hair out trying to murder this thing 🤣🤣

Not mine!! Caught every fish with different traps but this MF. Had to rip my whole tank and rock work up to get him. Dude killed all my corals, annoyed every fish in the tank and caused a ton of chaos and fighting with everyone. Was like a war zone in the tank. Got this dude out after pulling everything and when I put it back together my tank was peaceful...
I reeeeeeally don’t want to have to do that, but it’s becoming very clear that this is going to be my only option if I want this thing gone. So sad!!

I don’t even know how I’ll be able to do this wo killing the rest of my corals or nuking my tank myself. I have like 300 lbs of rock in there and with the most brilliant corraline cementing everything together. Not to mention all my HUUUGE sponges that took years to grow. I’m going to cry!

Omg!! My lights just popped on and 3 branches of my Micshagger Acro are destroyed. Ok… today is the day this war ends!! 🎣

Yeah that's where I was at too. I tried ambushing at night which always works for me but nope.

One last thing for anyone else who reads this… I have about 12 trapezia crabs in the tank and they live in all the corals this fish has been eating. They throw their claws out at it and it doesn’t even wane for a second.

DO NOT GET KLEINI BUTTERFLY IN YOUR REEFS!!!!!!!!!!

I would love to try everyone’s rejects . I have FOWLR . By everyone’s account this is not a delicate butterfly which I like . If any of y’all live near Houston . Let me know . We have an aquarium at a school with very limited funds and always looking for donations that fit in a 125 gal

I would easily say that this thing is hardier, quicker, smarter and more bold than my flame angel, if that helps at all. I actually wish I still had my flame angel (who sadly passed away last year) bc I believe he would’ve been the only one to help me get this ******* of a butterflyfish! Did the copper and first, n it didn’t nip nearly as bad as this guy, but was sooooo shy, n scared of everyone in the tank. He still ate and found his place in the pecking order. But it was so far down, I felt bad for him and was able to catch him in 10 minutes time to rehome him. This thing is a g??dang MONSTER!! 😈

Lol I converted to FOWLR after all my corals got eaten… he just went to picking at other fish for no reason. My eel tried to eat him a few times because he was so irritated with him swimming in his cave 😂 fish is lucky Ivar was a baby eel at the time…

Could this butterfly have the want to eat scales/mucous of other fishes? there are freshwater fish that do this

I haven’t noticed that at all… just likes to keep u from ever sleeping as u think about the carnage/sps felonies that he’s probably committing every second of every day AND night!!

This must be a very disturbing butterflyfish . Haha ! But I wouldn’t put it past it . If they disturb fishes too then maybe they are opportunistic , if they don’t find a food source then maybe they do take a nibble or a swipe at a fish . Example :a false cleaner wrasse

Unfortunately, the onus is always on the hobbyist to do their due diligence on what is acceptable when adding something and have a mitigation plan in place if something goes wrong.

stop feeding for a few days. then food in the trap. it WILL go in. Mine always do...same here though, no more.

Im still very surprised. This is my kleini of well over 4 years and causes zero issues

Well I always wanted butterfly fish but was worried about their acclimation to aquariums and their longevity . Always thought they were delicate and picky eaters . We have a FOWLR . is it better in multiples or singles ? I def want this species if many have success with them .

Certainly wouldn’t surprise me!! I WISH he’d go after my fish instead of my corals tho! 😂 AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! 😫

I completely blame myself…. With a very small portion if blame going out to @vetteguy53081, haha!! No, I am kidding. I just hate myself for choosing a fish strictly by reading so many positive claims/posts by one person alone. I should’ve waited much longer n vetted many more ppl. That all falls on me.

However, I feel I must repeat an earlier post of mine, as I think it’s just so funny (and FRUSTRATING) that when I was younger, w smaller reef tanks too, I’d just grab anything if I thought it looked “awesome”, n STILL never fell into any issues that were NEARLY as bad as the issues n stress this fish has caused me. Maybe the smaller tanks were helping as it was easier to catch the “trouble makers?” But still, I was SOOOOOO RECKLESS back then doing ZERO research before buying stuff, n now I’m so much more cautious…and THIS is when I end up getting the most problematic fish/situation of my entire life? I must’ve done something super horrible in a past life, bc if this isn’t bad karma? Idk what is. 🙃

That’s a REALLY pretty tank, fyi!! I love these pics. Looks very natural, as if I was snorkeling somewhere tropical. But, it looks like ur more of a softy dominant tank? I mean, obviously I’m not seeing the whole thing, but that may be what helps? Idk. I was actually expecting/hoping he’d eat softies, as I have outa control zoas starting to grow up my main rockwork in the tank he’s in. My zoa gardens are small and far from main structure. But obviously it only takes one polyp to detach n make it over for THAT whole wild fire to start up. My filefish used to love to eat zoas, but now that he’s FAT on frozen foods, he hasn’t even looked at any of my corals in years. The Kleini however, I’ve noticed is EXTREMELY PICKY about what lil morsels he eats from my homemade frozen mixes. I mean, my Mandarins are less picky than he is about eating. So, he’s like the opposite of my filefish… LOVES CORAL SO MUCH that he eats very little frozen food now. When I first got him, he ate everything like a pig. But he found what he likes, n is sticking to it, no matter how often my yellow Tang n I scare him away. This fish is public enemy number 1 for me!! 🐠😈
