The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

They are great books. I bought Volume 1 for the anthias.
I’ve currently got the angels/butterflies, the wrasses and the Hawkfish/Dottybacks/Basslets from the collection. All of them have (and continue to) shown me something new that I didn’t know.

Yk where to get them? I mean other than Amazon lol. You’ve got me intrigued.

I wish I did, all three of the books were gifts, one for Christmas and the other two were from my LFS’s one year anniversary (it was originally intended to be one but the owner gave me two).
From what I know, these are rather hard to get hold of now but they’re definitely worth it when you can get them.

I’ll do some digging then. If you couldn’t tell. I got bitten by the Wrasse Bug ;)

What are your dream leopards?

Mine are;
Choati (fun fact about me, my favourite colour is orange :))
Kuiteri (Females are gorgeous but the males just lose it for me unfortunately)
Negrosensis (nothing beats that galaxy look on the females and the teal the males gain)
Vivienae - I think this counts as a dream as they seem to be the second rarest and maybe the most pretty.

Too easy! 24 seconds and I got 100% without the book ;)
Guess you want a harder quiz then:

Whoops. Just realized I forgot to change the timer (changed it from 4 minutes to 20 minutes). I'll have that fixed by tomorrow.

Anyway with this quiz it's about how many you can get. Getting 100% should be too difficult.

I’m aiming to get 100% however it may actually be impossible haha

Is this one‘s answers scientific? Because if it is I don’t stand a chance lol.

Don’t know if I’ve shown this already however enjoy the two Lubbocki variants in one photo :)

Foreground is the Indonesian Cirrhilabrus lubbocki and Background is the Cebu Cirrhilabrus lubbocki.

Is this where I ask about wrasse compatability and potential stock lists?
Of course!
Knowing the people here you will get an answer with more helpful hints and incredible detail than you want.

Fantastic!

Here goes - kept reef tanks and FOWLR tanks in the early 2000s-2010. Moved 3 times since then and finally decided to get back in. Plan to start the reef up first. 72x30x25 225g 70/15/10/5 SPS/Acans/Ricordia/Zoas with a sandbed.

Was sharing some options from Dr. Reef and my wife said she really likes some of the wrasses. I had really only planned a Yellow Coris and a Mystery in my planned stock list but I really like that she wants to be involved.

She picked out (sorry for the generic names):

Carpenter
Ear Muff Wrasse (Halichoeres melasmapomus)
Blue Star Leopard
McCoskers
Linespot Flasher
Radiant (Iridis?)
Scott's
Red lined (Xmas?)
Splendid Pintail

Bunch of questions -
How many can be housed together in a tank our size?

Can wrasses be kept with Anthias?

Other planned fish "wants":
Chocolate Tang
Twin Spot Tang
Purple Tang
Powder Blue Tang (her choice)
Yellow or Scopas or Gem tang
Pair of clowns
Tail spot Blenny
School of 4/5 Lyretail Anthias
Candy Cane Hog (Bodianus masudai)

Been watching 2 beauties at one of my LFS since May of this year and finally pulled the trigger. Picked up a 3.5" Bodianus rufus, and a 5" Halichoeres bivittatus. No pics of the Halichoeres since it's in the sand bed, but the hog is already out and about. And so far, 0 drama between him and the broomtail. I am going to remove the neon dottyback though, since he keeps going aftet the hogfish, but we were planning on removing him anyways, since the ribbon eel eventually going in here would eat the dottyback.

I'm just a lowly learning apprentice but I'll give my best shot and fully expect @SaltyT and @i cant think to correct me.
  • Is the mystery still on the list because I don't think they play well with other wrasses.
  • Leopard wrasses don't ship well. They often get mouth injuries or disease so make sure you get it from a good source.
  • You've got 3-4 halichoeres (earmuff, radiant, and xmas, (and yellow coris?)) on the list which may be a lot for one tank. I'd think about swapping one for another genus like another fairy.
  • Scott's fairy is a bit of a monster as far as fairy wrasse go. Knowing Dr Reefs I'd go with Exquisite, lineatus, Rhomboidalis, Lubbocks, punctatus, katherinae.... just look at the chart below:
  • IMG_5015.png

  • Wrasses get along with most fish. Their only issue is some other wrasses. You could probably get 5-10 in your tank so long as you stick to more peaceful wrasses.
  • My only other note would be to try and get the flasher wrasses first as they will be more shy.
How'd I do wrasse experts?

Mystery would have been my choice :) but will make that sacrifice for her interest in the hobby.

Will gladly limit the Halichoeres. Do they all eat potential flatworms?

We had previously kept Golden Rhomboid, Lineatus and Labouti so we are very open to suggestions.

Yes, all halichoeres will eat pests like flatworms.

Halichoeres like all fish eat a general type of food. Halichoeres wrasses are famous for eating pests, and flatworms fall under that category for us with reef tanks. You will expect them to eat all, and most Halichoeres do, but like all of us….some of us like one thing, some of us like another, and some of us prefer something over the other. So will they eat generally all? Yes. Will every Halichoeres like to eat every single type? No. Now again that doesn’t mean the one you purchase does or doesn’t eat or prefer all. You’ll just have to wait and see. As a past Halichoeres owner, I would suggest a Silver Belly as they will go after most if not all pests like flatworms. Although, to ensure most if not all pests will be taken care of, I’d suggest having multiple Halichoeres. This doesn’t mean you wont always have pests. Just that you will have someone(s) on the job ready to manage the problem.
