It’s because they enjoy flashing and dive-bombing other fish more than other fairies I believe. It’s not really aggressive rather it just seems like they do it for fun.

And then people choose Naokos over the rebeus for the dive bombing making plus better colors

I did see a video of a naoko doing the dive bombing thing, which was impressive. The extra flash of yellow looks good, but I actually like the grey/red contrast and especially the long wispy fins on the rubeus.

Confession: I wasn't interested in wrasses when I first started the hobby a year and a half ago. Thought they were colorful boring fish. Blennies can perch and are super interactive! Gobies can pair with pistol shrimps! Clowns can be hosted by anemones and return nozzles!

Happy to say that this thread has turned that point of view upside down. Future 6'+ tank is going to be wrasse heaven :)

I don't know but I feel like we were probably all like that. It wasn't til my Naoko that I realized how special wrasse were. I now have 11 wrasse from 8 different genus'. Some have great personalities, some are beautiful but for me its the variety and the fact you can mix them.

P.s., has anyone in the world seen C. rubeus lately? I've been asking OceanDevotionLA and Dr Reef if they're able to find them and nada.

I believe this species is a seasonal species and generally comes in for the summer period and goes out for the winter periods.

I love my Naoko, he’s my favourite wrasse. I got this photo of him in display a while ago but when he’s all out displaying it’s gorgeous as his fins are like sails.

Rubeus, Rubriventralis and Naokoae are three wrasses that I’ve found to display very rarely and tend to be more submissive species. Most of the ‘aggressive’ nature I’ve found is from the displaying and being slightly more pushy when doing it.
Rubeus and Rubriventralis are both uncommon however I believe these two display less than Naokoae and aren’t as boisterous. The chart I disagree with when it comes to what’s labelled as aggressive and what isn’t, I have yet to find a nasty Melanomarginatus (even with ones I’ve cared for), Scottoum is highly 50/50.

That's what I figured. Dream tank would have an H. iridis, but I love my spaghetti worms a lot. Not to mention the sexy shrimp.

Sexy Shrimp are gone with any wrasse (Halichoeres, Macro, Cirrhilabrus sometimes, Pseudojuloides, Xenojulis, Pseudocheilinops, Wetmorella). Spaghetti worms get left alone most of the time - I had my blue star in with 2-3 Spaghetti worms and she left them alone.
Halichoeres iridis is a good choice as these guys do pest hunting but they don’t seem to hunt as many wanted inverts as some of the others do.


I have 9 (soon to be 10) wrasses total, over 2 tanks, of those 9 I have 5 genera;
Macropharyngodon
Xenojulis
Halichoeres
Cirrhilabrus
Pseudocheilinops

None of them touch my wanted inverts (Harlequin Serpent Star, Cleaner Shrimp, Fire Shrimp, Milk Spotted Cowrie, Sally Light Foot Crab, Pistol Shrimp, Many different species of Snails). The only invert I’ve ever lost was a Tiger Pistol Shrimp because when I introduced him to the tank he didn’t go into the rocks with his YWG and hung outside for a while. I haven’t seen a body at all but I haven’t seen sheds either and I’m unsure Ive heard him since adding him (November-ish).

Hello I lost one of my pink streaks, When planning the possibility of adding another would be safe to add 2 More? Or should I stick with just adding one?

This species is not legally imported anymore, and I don’t believe Hawaiian fish are being imported yet.
These two don’t look to be a pair but more so a Roseafascia female and Jordani male but the female photo isn’t great.

ReefPro did have the Hawaiian flamed wrasse for sale. It is currently sold out. $2999. Reef pro currently has Madagascar flasher wrasse $5999 -$6499. Who would be foolish to spend that much money on a fish

Snapped a quick photo of the fiji exquisite fairy I picked up today. I've been watching him at the store since the beginning of March, finally pulled the trigger today. This is 15 minutes after going into quarantine. Snapped a poor quality pic of the baby ornate leopard in there as well, just so y'all can see how tiny she is. She's afraid of the phone, so always goes to the back when I try and take a pic. Chows down on brine, mysis, flake, and pellet though!

Personally I wouldn’t add anymore to an established specimen.
My pair may have killed off the third however I can’t 100% say if they did or didn’t kill her off.
