The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

Get the foxface! Do it! Any pictures of the Cirrhilabrus rubeus? Ive been thinking about getting one.

Just snapped a pic of him for ya:

He’s still pretty small and a bit timid of the new environment. Only been in the system for about 3 weeks or so. All the other wrasse seem to get along with him, but he usually avoids the hawkfish right now.

In comparison to my other wrasse, he is much more of a vivid red

I am leaving for a work trip this week, back in mid june. Might have to place an order thru dr reef when i get back.
I am thinking
-Cirrhilabrus rubeus or Cirrhilabrus naokoae
-some variety of pencil wrasse
-Cirrhilabrus laboutei

Already have-
Halichoeres marginatus at id say max size. Over 6”
Paracheilinus mccoskeri
Macropharyngodon bipartitus

Might go for 7 wrasses but i think 6 will be a nice even number.

Pencil wrasses are by far the best wrasses - they also do a better job at pest hunting than most of the Halichoeres I’ve kept :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:
I really need to do a proper photo session in the tank as some of my wrasses have never been photographed now

Still searching for a severnsi over here!

I’m still looking for more pencils as always. Don’t think I updated you on my 2 female pencils, but neither have emerged from the sand.
The mystery female I had was the most infuriating to lose as I am 90% sure it was a female Labrynthus.

Awesome!

I’ve heard the naokoae can be pretty aggressive, so I would maybe watch for that if you decide to add one. That’s why I chose the Rubeus instead of a Naokoae. I do love the look of the Naokoae though. For some reason they resemble an Orca to me.

See, I’ve heard Naokoae can be quite boisterous but I’ve never seen it in person. Albeit I’ve had some other rather boisterous wrasses which have behaved totally different to how they’re meant to. My main ones being my Cirrhilabrus melanomarginatus and my Halichoeres chloropterus;

I knew there was a wrasse I should’ve photoed today whilst I was down at the shop, dang it!

Wish i could have both a Cirrhilabrus rubeus and a Cirrhilabrus naokoae. The naokoae has always been a favorite of mine but the picture of slockes… im a sucker for a wrasse with beautiful fins.

If it was one or the other, what would you choose?

I’d go for Naokoae, or… try and source a joanallenae (I’ve seen them surfacing a bit more recently). Basically, Joanallenae is what Naokoae used to be sold as, but it has both features of Naokoae and Rubeus with the colouring of Rubeus, a slight yellow band in some instances, and the big paddle pelvic fins of Naokoae;

Got my new wrasse additions in

Ordered Lineatus Fairy, Blue Flasher, and RedTail Flasher. Unfortunately the RedTail didn’t show up at my fish shop from the wholesaler 🙁.

None the less, the Lineatus and Blue flasher are both stunning and in an acclimation box in the tank.

In the few hours they’ve been in the box, I can already tell there’s gonna be a major issue between the Blue flasher and my Longnose hawkfish. The Hawkfish is constantly trying to attack the Blue flasher.

The Hawkfish has already been harassing my Ruby Longfin pretty often which had me considering removing the Hawk. To the point to where the Ruby is afraid to come out and eat.

I ordered the Bubble Magus fish trap which will be here Friday. I’ll get the Hawk out before I release the new wrasse into the tank.

On a positive note, none of my established wrasse seem to mind the new additions at all 🤘🏼

I’ve come to the conclusion that hawkfish and wrasse rarely ever work out… I had a Lyretail that murdered my Iridis, then went after my first Diamond Tail to the point I rarely saw him out.
It got to a point I just had to remove the hawkfish altogether, and even in a shop environment I have seen this same issue with hawkfish vs wrasses. So I have hit a point where I recommend avoiding them altogether if you want wrasse in your system.

Also, that Lineatus is a beauty!

Thank you!

Hawk will be coming out this evening. Unfortunately he has claimed the ruby tail. Attempted to move ruby tail to a hospital tank but his injuries were too great.

Good to see chloroptosaurus again. Actually looks quite nice!

They’re older photos - I need a new photo of her (That’s this weekend’s task!)
She really has coloured up so nicely though, infact she doesn’t look overly dissimilar to that photo.
