The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

My katoi had been pretty aggressive when it comes to food, but not mean towards the two smaller wrasse in my QT (tiny attenuatus and 2" cf. lanceolatus). I've had him for 2 weeks now at 78° controlled. Curious who will be the dominant between him and my rhomboid and rubrisqamis...both of which are equally dominant.

Please keep us updated and good luck with them. How big is the Katoi?

Yeah, I know about the earlie, maybe that's why I lost the last one, he was too hot! Lol!
I know many of the rarer fish we keep are from deeper water and some adjust better than others to our tank temps,

Nah; you'd be surprised - most are pretty adaptable. I've had my earlei over 2 years at 78-80F.

I'm tempted to go with a rosefascia instead or as well,

A good choice to avoid; as eatbreakfast points out, gets very large and sometimes very aggressive.

I'm going to have to do something with my dominant johnsoni

Add more competition. :)
But I've seen how feisty the species can be; I have 2 males and had 3 males for a little while. Lots of bark and not much bite though, so to speak.

Size is definitely the main factor

Eh, to some extent, but not necessarily. It certainly can be a factor though.

Anyone know if nutramar ova is still in production?

No as far as I know.

I'll take a look at the Potter's today. More than 99% of me says that I'll leave it in the store QT for awhile. We work together on many of things, so I know its not going anywhere. We'll see how it does there. Evolved- I know it is one of the more difficult ones to take on. I figure you have to start somewhere and I do have a couple of other tanks that are available to switch to if the need would arise. My most aggressive acting fish are usually a Fowler's Surgeon (usually leaves wrasse alone), female Darwin Ocellaris (part of a pair) and a young male Hooded wrasse currently. My Magnificent Foxface, Lineatus wrasse, Canary wrasse, Golden Dwarf Angel, Bartlett Anthias (1,M), Lyretail Anthias (4, F) and Mandarin Dragonet(F) are all peaceful. The other tank would have another young male Hooded wrasse, Sunburst Anthias and a Orange Bar Goby.

My potters is fast becoming my favorite fish especially as it gets bigger. It eats everything I put in the tank from pellets to nori

It's about 1.5-2" juvenile, pretty small. It's active and swimming with a few damsels and a yellow tang right now at the store. Definitely not shy.

My Potter's became "tame" faster than any fish I've ever had. It has never been shy. I did have to work a little to get him to eat but once I got him to eat it's been no problem to transition to what ever I want to feed the tank. He is a very aggressive eater, stealing food out of the mouth of my butterfly that's easily 5x his size.

Yeah, I got the background on this little juvenile. He originated from Sustainable Aquatics and has been captive tank raised. So he is used to tank life and being fed in a tank. He had only been in a tank for about 2-3 hours when I saw him today. He was swimming around and being very active, no damage that was visible. Thing that was surprising is that he never once dove for the sand bed. I threw in some pellets while standing there and he went to the bottom and sat there while the big fish swam around and grabbed some pellets. The pellets that reached the bottom he picked up a couple. I also noticed that he was picking at some pods that were in the tank. I think all of these are great signs for the fish. The only thing that concerns me is his size. He would definitely be the smallest fish in the display, just wondering if that is inviting trouble. He could be placed in the smaller tank till he grew a bit. I would need to add a layer of fine sand. It has fine crushed coral, Fiji Pink, in it currently. It's only about 1" deep, so it could be a bit deeper without issue.

Any thoughts?

The small size may actually help avoid problems. Many times aggression is directed at a fish that is a perceived rival or threat to resources, being smaller the potter shouldn't be viewed as either. As long as he won't be eaten by any other inhabitants, there shouldn't be an issue. Just be sure to use a social acclimation box upon introduction to the DT.

That mix should work just fine.

Yeah I agree; that all sounds fine and I'd push forward as well without worry on the size. And the inch of sand may be enough as it is.

I agree the mix will be fine, but know you will end up with multiple males of the same species there.

Lol I'm sorry. I will be getting one of each I also have a black fin that's already in the tank that they will be going in. I should have them on Sunday. What other wrasses can I add without problems.

That could well be a problem; usually an aggressive species as a close cousin to scottorum.

So you believe he could go straight to the main display then and bypass the smaller tank? The display has been set up longer and is more mature. Definitely has more pods and diversity of critters to pick from for food and the sand bed is finer and a bit deeper. I don't have anything that is deemed aggressive or that could eat him in one gulp. It would only be through harassment.

You'll fellow wrasse lovers woulda been excited my LFS had 6 gorgeous pintail wrasses today. Only thing that held me back is my qaurantine tank is in mid qaurantine now and I didn't wanna expose the fish in there to copper for longer than I had to

Forgot to add a piece of pvc when I put it all together. Will add one before bed tonight.
