The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

Do wrasse sometimes swim erratically? Like they've lost their balance? I have one that's acting weird today. Still eats great.
Only in the instance of a spinal injury or a swim bladder infection I'm afraid.

My melagris curled up and was swimming very oddly (liked floating) around the tank. It did this for the first 2 to 3 days just before bed time in the sand. It's all normal now and doesn't do that wierd swimming anymore.

If you are served grilled prawns, do you pay much attention to the size? :p
Thanks for your help on this matter, I contacted the fish shop owner last night and he was willing to take the specimen back. I'm glad I found out about this! Thanks again. Now I just have to figure out how to catch the little guy...eeeeeek.

Hmmm. I have a flame angel that harasses him a little but nothing too serious. Are there any signs of a bladder infection? The fish looks perfect
With a swim bladder infection the back half of the fish will seem more buoyant than the front half and the wrasse will swim in a way to compensate for it. As the infection develops, a bulge in the abdomen will get more and more noticeable.

With a spinal injury, the tail of the fish will drop when it stops swimming.

A trap with shrimp usually works for checkerboards.

Gets guys can I add a melranrus wrasse to what I have already ? Please see earlier post
A melanurus should be fine with your current stock.

OK, definitely doesn't look like a bladder infection. Don't know how he would have gotten a spinal injury. He just looks like he has no sense of balance at all. But when I put food in, he straightens up more or less and is entirely capable of enthusiastically eating. Weird.

Usually occurs from running into things with great force; typically glass tank covers. Occasionally can happen too with the sides of the tank if really spooked.

Great, thank you! Do you have a favorite trap that you would recommend? :)

I use 2 different ones. One is an old AquaMedic fish trap. The other is a few pieces of eggcrate zip tied together to make a box with only 1 side open.

I have a red coris wrasse and want to add another, I've read that sometimes wrasses are aggressive towards each other, what wrasse would you recommend to go with a red coris. Thanks in advance

Crappy video of my new male p. carpenteri and terminal phase male c. rubriventralis! Just stunning wrasse! They go nicely nicely with my gorgeous h. melasmapomus female :)

What size tank? In most cases any Halichoeres species, most Coris species, dragon wrasse, razor wrasses, Oxycheilinus species.

beautiful wrasses!!

do all wrasse go straight to bed as soon as lights out? mine's still in QT, and as soon as I turn the lights out, they immediately go into the PVC pipe.

I am still fascinsated and learning about their behaviors, its fun!
