He’s very peaceful. He gets along with the other tank mates - Flame wrasse, Pintail, blue cleaner wrasse, orange storm, fatty borbonius, and a beautiful Gem tang.

Hi All,

I’d like to know if there’s anything I can do to encourage my male wrasses to flash. For example, my terminal phase male flame wrasse almost never flashes, even in the presence of a female flame wrasse and other non-flame wrasses. Is there something I can do?

There's not a whole lot really. Do you have a "dusk" period in your light cycle? That is when fish spawn and the time of day you'd be most likely to see flashing.

What is maximum size of Melanurus Wrasse? LA says 4.5” but others say 5-6”.

Around 5" is about right, IME. (12-13 cm)

There's not a whole lot really. Do you have a "dusk" period in your light cycle? That is when fish spawn and the time of day you'd be most likely to see flashing.

I have a Red Sea LED90 running on a 11-hr 23,000 Kelvin cycle with 1 hr sunset/sunrise and 3-hr moon phase, so I’m assuming there’s a “dusk” phase in there somewhere . Also, does the degree of water flow affect their propensity to flash?

Not to my knowledge (provided there is at least some flow).

Yes, about the same at the 12-13 cm mark.

What about H. Claudia

A little smaller; 9-10 cm.

and H. Biocellatus

And the same again; 12-13.

I would not; highly likely multiples will transition to male and fight.

I’m looking at Hunter’s diagram and see that C. laboutei is in a group by itself and appears to be somewhat aggressive. Can it be kept along with Flame Wrasse pair, Rhomboid Wrasse, and a C. africanus / P. attenuatus pair in a 250-gal?

Genetically, it's the grandfather to the rest.

Most adults of the species do tend to be a bit aggressive for Cirrhilabrus. Some do not, however; luck of the draw.

You should be okay given the size of the tank.
