Thoughs on tank overflow pipe size reduction

I am in the process of setting up my 120 rimless GC tank. What are your thoughts on reducing my overflow piping to the sump from 1 1/2" down to an 1" pipe? Would there be any obvious reasons not to do this other than reducing flow? The return pipe to the tank is 1" from the factory.

1" would probably be fine, you could slap a ball or gate valve on the drain to dial it in if you are worried about excessive gurgling

Why are you reducing? I would not. Dont Do a valve unless you have emergency drain

What is your reason for reducing the size?
A 1" overflow if configured correctly should be all you would need up to about 700-800 GPH but why not stick with 1.5" if you can? Lower velocity should be quieter.

If you have a single never ever restrict the flow with a valve, if you want to reeuce the flow do it with a valve on the discharge of the return pump which is what governs flow rate for the overflow.
