Thoughts on "Ecosystem Build" content creators on Youtube?

There's a pattern I keep seeing on YouTube that I think deserves some honest discussion, especially from a community that actually understands closed-system stability.

The format goes something like this: a content creator decides to build an "ecosystem" tank or vivarium. The pitch is usually that nature will balance itself if you just add enough life. So animals get added in rapid succession, often without quarantine, often without species compatibility research, and almost never with an honest assessment of the tank's bioload capacity or long term viability. Then, predictably, things start going wrong. Algae explodes. An animal stops eating. Something dies. The creator's response? Add another animal to "fix" it. Rinse, repeat, film, upload.

A few examples I came across recently:
  • Leafy Street: Adding Animals to my tiny beach (I regret it) - Animals added quickly, problems emerge, more animals added to address those problems.
  • The Nature Bucket: I Built a Shallow Reef Ecosystem (filterless) - a 7-month "filterless shallow reef ecosystem" project that, watching it back, looks more like a sequence of livestock additions for content beats than a considered build.
  • AntsCanada: (Literally every video) - probably the most prolific example. Years of mixed vivariums combining lizards, ants, fish, inverts, amphibians and plants in single enclosures, with new species regularly introduced to "balance" issues caused by earlier introductions.
My issue isn't with the concept of a biotope or a genuinely planned mixed-species system as those exist and can be done well. It's with the underlying premise these videos are selling: that "ecosystem" means "throw enough life in a box and nature handles it." Real ecosystems run on enormous water volumes, energy inputs, migration, predation pressure, and waste export pathways that simply don't exist in a glass cube on someone's desk. A glass box of any size is not a self regulating ecosystem. It's a closed system that needs specific animal husbandry.

The part that bothers me most is the feedback loop. New animal causes problem - add new animal - that one causes its own problem = add another. Each addition is a living creature whose welfare has been subordinated to the next episode's hook.

And honestly, the thing that makes it harder to push back on is the comment sections. The communities around these creators rarely offer anything beyond praise and amazement. Genuine concern gets drowned out or downvoted, which I think actively fuels the fire and the creator gets validation, the algorithm rewards the engagement, and the cycle continues with the next animal added to the next "ecosystem."

When it comes to the welfare of the animals and overall lack of empathy for their suffering I don’t think we need to go far beyond some of the content in the reef community. Plenty of threads of people trying things out with a recent comment: “worst case is I’m out $100”. Humans see animals as part of the entitlement we get for being top of the food chain. It’s sad and concerning but I don’t know what can be done about it.
 
You know that "Out of the frying pan and into the fire" is how every successful TV series has been written since the Sopranos....

YouTube knows you love these biotope drama videos so they keep serving them to you! If you dislike a bunch of them they will stop showing up in your feed 🤣

I think part of the problem is that some of these YouTube ecosystem projects often confuse biodiversity with an actual functioning ecosystem. Adding more species increases biodiversity but it doesn’t automatically create stability, in fact in small reef aquariums constantly adding new organisms often does the opposite by increasing biological load and competition. I’m from the thought that reef aquariums can support ecosystems alike relationships and there are genuine small systems that can run successfully for years.
A good example here is phytoplankton, that can easily support the foundation of the system by feeding diverse amounts of zooplankton species, microbiology and filter feeders, phytoplankton will support the ecosystem function rather than just increase biodiversity just for the sake of it.
Thats why I think that experienced aquarists will look at this videos with a different perspective. If an aquarium needs constant major changes in order to stay balanced, then maybe the aquarium wasn’t truly stable to begin with.

I remember that build, it was an impressive aquarium, just a shame I haven’t seen any more updates on it since.

He’s not very active on R2R. He does however post updates frequently on his instagram and YouTube!
 
Honestly,

I know it's called "Youtube", but I would love to see a "narcissist dial" to dial down all the narcissistic content on YT when it comes to search results.

I just watched the brackish system video… what a mess…

From a fabrication standpoint:

— the sump has all chambers equally sized, with a triple baffle bubble trap between every. Single. Chamber… oh, then they realized the return chamber was too small for changing tides, and just stuck a second tank next to it to increase return chamber volume….

— the canister filter’s plumbing size is questionable for a tank of this volume, as is much of the other plumbing in general…

— the stacked glass along the tank’s bottom seams was not fully seated in areas, leaving a huge pocket of silicone between glass components…
