Encrusting corals are a pain because once they're on there, it's hard to do anything with them. Not encrusting corals are a pain because they fall into other corals that kill them. Danged, if you do danged, if you don't, that's reefing in a nutshell.

Just secure them well using epoxy and superglue.

There really isn't any real downsides to corals that encrust as you can easily kill them if you want them gone (bar the most invasive ones).

They can be harder to frag if you want them on your main rockscape, which is why I often times go for separate smaller islands for these.
