Toadstool Leather barely opening

Okay so my toadstool leather is out but not all the way, this is my first toadstool. Doesn’t look or seem like shedding.
WATER PARAMETERS:
Salinity:1.026
Ph:8.2
Phos: 0.3
Nitrate: 0ppm recently was at 5 around there and going up but then shot back down, I don’t run any carbon btw.
Ca: 440
Magnesium: 1300
DKH: 10
Ammonia: 0ppm


It’s around the middle of the tank a bit towards the top, I run 3 Hyggers, 2 60watts and 100 watt on my sps and green hynos

What can be the issue or solution to this.

It’s could be shedding, but it does seem a little strange looking for it to be shedding. Also, the polyp size seems really large compared to normal, but that could just be me over analyzing.

Gotta get more nitrate in the water and phosphate down. I would dose Neonitro or an approved equal and run some phosguard or rowaphos. There needs to be a healthier range for any coral for the matter. Get mag up to 1400. ESV is a good brand that's inexpensive and works.

For soft corals, dirtier water, with about 10 to 20 PPM nitrate and 0.02 to 0.1 Po4 is a decent range.

I am also running a tank that is always nitrogen limited. After dosing No3, my corals always seem to puff up a bit and look healthier.

I will say my Toadstool will look like that if a fish swam to close to it or pooped on it lol.

My Nitrates are also around 18ppm

I would keep the phosphates at the level they are at now, my phosphates are currently at .8 and everything in my tank looks great. Monitor the phosphate to make sure there is no spike, but I would say only parameter that needs changing is nitrates

I agree with everyone. It could be shedding. Toadstool can close up for days and look shiny when there is too much algae on them. They will then shed this slime coat and open up again. Is it a new addition? Leathers can take a minute to adjust to a new tank. Definitely get those nitrates up. I accidentally let my nutrients bottom out for a couple of days and my lps and some of my softies were not happy. The sps didn’t seem to care at least. You can dose nitrates and raise them slowly, or you can feed your tank more. Your fish will appreciate the latter more.

Yeah, agree with everyone. Increase nitrates. Keep phosphates stable. Just give it sometime

Yeah and ?... I think carbon could be your friend on this. Leathers can be moody. They are easy in the fact that they are hard to kill but hard because they can be easily irritated. That and they do the whole close up for a couple weeks to shed.

Whenever mine is in the proses of shedding, I'll just brush it gently with a toothbrush and it will open back up the next day.

Truthfully I am a stick person. The leathers I have came in on or with something. I am no expert. They are in my tanks and I just let them do their thing until they get so big I have to take them out and cut them up. Then I have more....

i agree, I guess they can be closed up for long duration but I don't really have that experience. Mine usually closes for a day or two then polyps are back out.

I have found flow to be the most important thing for leathers, if there is not enough water movement the polyps will not come out. IME

True. I keep my leathers at medium-high random flow

Get nitrates up and make sure its in medium flow.

My experience mimics Mojo's, closed for a day or two, but opens back up after that... I've never had any of my toadstools closed for 2 weeks.

I have a large toadstool that's been in for years that will look like its dying when it sheds. The last time was over a month and I almost pulled it but it's growing on two rocks and I didn't want to mess with moving rocks around. Mine is in moderate to high light and flow. I've found it easier to please acros than keep my leathers happy looking lol.

Raise your toadstool if possible. They need good constant flow and moderate light.

I've never had any of my toadstools closed for 2 weeks.

I have had my toadstool close up for about a month once I got it, but it has never closed up after that.
