Torch coral lost color.

Hello. I have a new york knicks torch that kept its purple tips. But the tentacles are mostly brown with a tiny bit of gold left. Polyps are extended and it is splitting. Right now, everything is happy. I have my light on blues only. Do I need a different spectrum? Mix? Please advise

Ironically I have a kessil A500X over it running at 72% the light is mountes quite high though at least 16" I think. Whatever the highest the kessil arm can go. Btw. Temp is 80. Ph is 8.2. Salinity 35.7. ORP 248. Last time I checked everything with my par meter. I think the torch sat in about 200-220 par.

Over how much time did the torch lose colour?

My experience for gold is… higher nitrates and high par! My 24k lost a bunch of gold and I placed directly under a metal halide about 6” down… I’d guess 400 par range and it exploded with growth and the gold is insane now.. my Knicks was the same case it likes a 14k lighting but not as much par.

agreed, I think the browning out is due to the lower nitrates if you say you have around 200-250 par

Add some white in there.. like I mentioned above all the goldest torches I’ve seen are in daylight and not blue lighting..

My 24k losing its gold, looks just like the knicks next to it now. Slowly ramping up the lights and placing it higher in the tank hopefully get the gold back. Nitrates are within the 20-25ppm range, trying to get it down a bit.

How much white do you run? I do 2-5% not sure if I should bump it up more. Not too worry about algae besides the occasional GHA which I pull off by hand when it gets too long, I have lots of CUC and refugium to control most of it.

I personally run Phoenix 14k metal halides it’s very white, with radions on a ab+ schedule.. my tank is very white with a blue tone.. my torches came from a tank running red sea 90’s and he ran a very white program and the gold colors were the nicest I’ve ever seen.. I tried torches in my frag area with just blues under a Ai hydra and they lost the gold color. They look a little dull under pure white lighting 6,500-10,000k but when the blues come on at sunset they glow like you’ve never seen before..

Thanks! I'll try bumping up my whites a bit. I do like it more white so I can see my fishes color better.

depends on the zoa. I have blasted some zoas with insane amount of light and others will want really low light

a tad low for LPS; you could try feeding more to get more nitrates

Most likely due to poor lighting, low par. The symbiotic zoo within the coral that is photosynthetic is not getting enough light to feast on. Corals atleast need a minimum of 4-5 hours of full spectrum daily.

I myself am having trouble bringing out the brightest of colors. I have tried reading up on zooxanthellae, nutrients, and light intensity and am having a hard time dialing it in last couple months. Can someone explain like I’m 5 please lol

Also I shot for 10 nitrates but noticed someone on here stated 10 may be a little low?

10 is low imo. For sps I guess that would be high. I keep mine much higher than anyone would imagine and they tend to color better.

I run mine 25-35 with Sps and my lps
