I was moving my torches around (I guess bad decision) and one had a plug that was glued down pretty good to the rock. I was pulling on the plug and as soon as I get it off (with some pressure) the torch basically exploded and tentacles flew off. It’s now super retracted. I am not sure how that even happens. Has this happened to anyone else?

Lights are off I can get one tomorrow if it’s still alive. It was just super retracted. Single head gold torch. Literally looked like confetti

I moved it to a new tank (going through major uglies because my cleaner shrimp seemed to take an interest in it afterwards and I wanted it in lower flow and light). But as you can see a majority of its tentacles are now short and stubby. Was this a defense mechanism? Like a lizard dropping its tail??

This is a new tank that I am quarantining the torch in after the explosion. Not sure if it was the best idea or not moving it but I’d rather not move it back into the main tank. Want to make sure it doesnt BJD on me too. The brown everywhere is diatoms. In the tank it came from it has been established for years and nitrate is usually 15 or so and phos is like .05

Shattered.

Could have been weak skeletal growth.
I done that a few times when fragging.

I doubt it causes any grief, except maybe the loss of that head.

They don’t take much.

Guys the weird thing is the skeletal structure is totally fine. I pulled from the plug, not the skeleton. The polyp is still contained in the structure and tissue band is still below the ridges by a good amount. This was an otherwise healthy torch that somehow detached most of its tentacles halfway down.

What torch is it ? Looks like it's gonna have some nice colour to it when it gets back to full health. Think you should just send it my way to look after for you , and I'll cut you off a frag when it's looking good again.

lol. It’s a 24k torch something or another. Got it from seacocorals for about 80 bucks I think. It was doing great. The head seems to be dividing into three as of now. You can even tell the tentacles that cleaved off because they are missing the color pearls at the tip. Funny enough, one tentacle lodged itself into a goni colony and I found it super retracted last night and had to get some tweezers to pull it out. Very weird!!

Whelp this literally just happened to me with my gold hammer… wanted to rearrange and my epoxy/superglue worked a little too well so had to really pull and it popped off into my palm and literally exploded like confetti… so devastated and now just did the same thing. Moved tk low flow and now praying for the best. Was afraid I nuked the tank from all the gold head floating around. ***
