Hello all,

Looking to purchase this coral. Seller has it listed as a trachy open brain. Just wanted to confirm the ID with the group here before buying. TIA!

Ok thanks Turtle! What would be the value of a small trachy such as the one pictured?
I havent been into coral buying in a while. I know a few years ago they got really expensive because Indo closed... maybe $100-150 retail for a small one? Idk honestly.

There are two types of trachy... Trachyphyllia geoffroyi which are commonly called open brain corals, and Trachyphyllia radiata which are sometimes called welso or folded brain corals.

Geoffroyi will have a stalk like base that is cut when collected, in the wild this skeleton is attached to the reef. They also have really random growth patterns and really squiggly edges.

Radiata have a sort of concave, smooth underside and are naturaly completely detached from any rock. They also have a very rounded, almost symmetrical shape. Think hemispheric.

If I had to guess just from that picture, I'd say that's a geoffroyi, but I'm not 100%. I am certain that is a trachy tho.
