I had a copperband do this to one of mine before. He got evicted and the replacement has not touch anything yet. More likely the flame but just keep an eye on him to.

I think I’ll do some testing today. I sent away an ICP last Monday, but probably won’t be seeing the results until next week. It’s on the sand bed, so I believe it is under 100 PAR, ( assumption, can’t give a real value that is bonafide). I kinda think it might be something else, maybe parameter related. There is another tear, doubt it was a bite from the fishes. Any invertebrates that would do harm? What water parameters are Trachyphyllia most sensitive to? My magnesium is over 1500, haven’t been able to drop it, done 3 water changes in the course of 2 weeks comprising a 50% change in total water volume. My skimmate foam has been over the top literally, and that’s been my fault to over feeding corals and filter feeders. Normally a 10% weekly water change is my weekend chore. Been using a Red Sea 4 pump doser for 3 weeks. Last Sundays tests:
Calcium 400
Magnesium 1510
Alk 10.304 dkh
I’m Sure my calcium is on the rise, I’ll know later, my target value I’d like it to hold would be around 460. Just going to get it there slowly, but I think my magnesium numbers are never going to drop, and maybe that’s ok. I’ve read a few threads on people keeping it over 1500 for good reason. Idk, I probably messed something up, but everything else seems to be doing well.

There is hope to save it. But you need to find the nipper, I'd recommend low lights and low flow for recovery. There are so many coral foods now. Maybe someone kniws of a good energy booster?

Got the Trachyphyllia moved, it is in a slightly shaded area on the back of tank below the over flow. I appreciate all the responses and suggestions. I’m not a 100% sure there’s no fish involvement, but I kinda don’t think so. The tang is opportunistic and will definitely grab food from a feeding coral, my Flame Angel, yea I forgot they are a reef safe with caution fish, but it is always so busy in and out of rock crevices, doesn’t exhibit a lot of aggression, and I’ve never seen it nip at anything but aquascape. Kind of a fun fish to watch, because it is literally in every area of my tank, but probably no Angel to model reef behavior.

When i had a tank crash from a heater malfunction, my red trachy bleached and i threw her under a rock in full shade and low flow. These coral can handle 25 to 50 par.

Keeping it shaded will help keep algae from growing on the skeleton. They do heal quick. But, i can't say how this is going to go with all the flesh loss.

I did not feed for a week. You might need too sooner if possible.

I spent ~6 months looking for a Trach that I like enought to spend the $$ on it. It was awesume. Two weeks in my tank and the hippo Tang I had tore sheets of flesh off it and ate the entire thing.

Did I mention I *had* a hippo tang?

Got my ICP. Zinc, Iron, Lithium are way high. Not sure what it is that I’m doing that would give a high content to Lithium in my tank. Most other values look good. Strontium needs to drop some.https://www.triton-lab.de/en/showroom/icp-oes/234174

Just a few values on my previous analysis I had the end of December of 2024. I was a lot more on target with those results. Been coral feeding heavy, so I get the whopper of an increase in phosphate. I use Phytoplankton, zooplankton, aminos, reef roids, and Oyster feast for general broadcast feeding. Like the oyster feast , but a little goes a long ways, and I think it really ups the foam refraction on the skimmer. Target feed once weekly cynarina and acanthophyllia Some Mysis or pellets. Will say it is a pretty rich buffet, and I’m going to lessen how much, and lessen what is being added together. Gyres need cleaned again and seems like I just did the 6 I have in the tank. Mp-40 takes 5 minutes, 1 gyre about 35-40 minutes! Guess I’ll have a busy weekend! Anyone know what is causing my Lithium value to be so high. Maybe it is a good mood stabilizer for the more aggressive fish.

Iron was off the chart also, I guess now that I have the Red Sea Reef Doser, I better be testing Iron and stop the chaeto grow additive, along with my usual twice a week addition of iron in my supplementation. Do have a thick mass of chaeto growing, I’m sure it is liking all the foods and iron additives, but maybe my Trachyphyllia isn’t well with that high of value being way beyond a recommended set point.

Is there a good test for iron? I haven't found one at the levels we keep in the reef tank. Maybe check all your magnets with zinc and iron elevated. Could be the chaeto grow with the iron but I think that would take some heavy dosing? Makes me wonder about some metal somewhere with the zinc too.

.15ppm phosphate isn't terrible. What are your nitrates?
