anybody ever make a trickle filter into a sump like DIY it so that you can fit skimmer and such and have room for a refugium?? I just got an oceanic tank from sopmeone and it came with oceanic systems trickle filter

I converted a 36" trickle filter that came with the tank. It had 3 equal size compartments, so I just stuck with that layout & added acrylic baffles where needed. Left side (just visible) is fuge, that flows over weir to return pump (middle section). Right side is skimmer section, that draws water from the filter socks in middle. If you go this route, play around with layout before gluing any baffles/walls in place & use a two part or plastic cement, as silicone just won't bond well to the acrylic. HTH
