I do not think that you can really go wrong with clams right out of the bag. I would not get one that has been in their tanks for a while, but fresh from the wholesaler should be as good as it gets.

I think that is exactly right. The Petco guy actually said that also - let them order you a clam and give you a call the day it comes in so they can just hand you the clam in the bag it shipped in.

from my travels around the NJ petcos (ten stores or so), this is exactly what I've found. Hit or miss with selection and condition the items are kept in. There were a couple of stores that actually employed outside aquarium maintenance companies to work as petco employees to care for the tanks. But I've only purchased a yellow tang from them in the past.

I buy a lot of my livestock from a local Petco, as with most forum drama there is a lot of miss information. Be a well informed buyer and you'll fare well.

There was a nice 4" Derasa at my local Petco a couple weeks ago for $79. Still regret not getting it. I also bought a nice juvenile Purple Tang there for $99. He is now twice the size, fat & happy almost 7 months later. No disease at all. I almost didn't buy it, but now glad I did. I agree that it is cleaner than some LFS that I have seen.
i did the same thing.I got my derasa at Petco and it is great.Went back to get food a couple of weeks later and bought the purple tang. Both are happy and healthy

Several fish as well. Mine will order them for you, then I pick them up when they arrive and never enter their tanks

Hmmm.. I tried to go to a Petco to do a special order, but the guy told me that they do not do special orders, and he directed me to their official website to do online ordering. The store has a saltwater section, so it's not like they don't get saltwater livestock either.
