Trident reagents

Probably already noted but reagent supply, similar to toilet paper believe it or not, are impacted by the current pandemic around the world. Like it or not that is just the plain, simple, and honest answer. I tied toilet paper but I could have also used food items such as flour or bread to draw a comparison. One other thing that is causing the shortage believe it or not is the hobbyist. Yeah, the Trident owners. See it was polled a while back or discussed what would be a minimum testing day look like. What would a max test look like. And with all that data and the beta testers data and sales data a reagent supply chain was made. Makes sense because there is a shelf life on the product and you don't want bad ones getting into the hobbyist hands, right? Sort of like that expired beer or soda in the fridge - yuckie.
Anyway there was a live stream on Feb 20th - check it out, it isn't bad - that raises this issue with reagents. See, hobbyists with tridents are actually testing more frequently than what they thought. More testing means more reagent use. More reagent use means higher demand. Higher demand means we have to widen our net to find them. Most trident owners buy the 6 month box, as we should, to save money. So when you open that 2nd box or finish the 2nd box and are on your 3rd usually we start setting up price alerts or searching the web to find the next set. This is what I do and haven't run into issues until the recent pandemic.
Enter the pandemic and work forces change such that we haven't seen before. Things like reagents will be impacted. We just have to ride it out and adjust. If you can't find a reagent or don't want to pay for the 2 month box - which I don't blame anyone - you can shut down the trident until reagents come back online. We really don't know what is in store for the U.S. as it relates to the virus and business both large and small. Didn't think I would be impacted by it but alas I will be so who knows. Maybe I'll call up Neptune and see if they have a mixologist position open :) Never too late to go from IT to Reagent mixing :)

It absolutely amazes me that the Trident has been out now for just over a YEAR and STILL we have reagent supply issues. They ask $599.99 for a testing unit, then the ability to actually get the reagents is difficult at times to say the very least. Amazes me how companies like these get away with asking so much $$$ for their products and still can't sort out supply chain issues a year after the product began being sold...
I don't agree that the $600 asking price is an absorbent amount of money for the Trident. When you break down what Neptune is wholesaling these for it is probably around $450-$500 and for that they have to build in a an accurate dosing pump and many other components. I would say its a fair price for what it does. I think their business model mostly revolves around making money on the reagents. These reagents probably come in from a factory in 55 gallon drums and when you pour them into these little bottles it's like liquid gold ;Greedy.

Well, you can still get 2 months supply, they're still in stock as of right now at Saltwateraquarium.
Yes, I calibrate mines to my salifert.
I have no issues getting reagents, they are in stock at my LFS monthly.

There was actually a user on here that posted that he had created some diy reagents but never released how to do it. Jim Welsh seemed pretty opposed to the guy releasing how he made them so I’m guessing it was probably legitimate.

I still have 4 months worth of reagents on hand, but I will definitely look into buying these when I need to order more.
