They’re pretty! Does the name matter? I’m not with all the new fancy names. I don’t see the point. If you like them, buy them!

Just about every piece of wild-collected zoanthid colony has some zoas on it that look like eagle eyes... there are likely hundreds of different genotypes being sold as "eagle eye" just like most other zoas. Its like if every wild-caught striped cat was being sold as a "Maine Coon Cat".

I vote eagle eyes

I voted yes. So much depends on the light spectrum, light intensity, water chemistry, camera settings, and screen your viewing the picture on. Funny that, these photoed with red and violet LED channels way up and a fully black background could sell for 80 a polyp instead of 50 for a small colony.

One main rule I have buying Zoas pertains more to everything else in the photo and not the zoa...“if the background don’t fit, you must acquit”

Oh i'm not fancy enough to add a black background or anything. If anything my photo skills would make it look worse. Really just growing them for the fun of it, not profit or anything.

So....I'm in the camp that it is not a Eagle Eye. To prove my point I give you exhibit A:

I'll raise that with exhibit B:

But wait - there is more. Maybe we are thinking it is this Eagle Eye - the action thriller movie. I give you exhibit C:

No...it is just a color morph of the Zoantharia, Zoanithids, Zoanithidea, families and/or genera. All images, information, and or otherwise things are not mine and from whatever wikipedia I was at :)

When I got back into this hobby, the realization quickly hit me that people were actually thinking they could attach consistent names to every one of thousands or perhaps millions of possible zoanthid and palythoa variations, and then using that to create an aura of exclusivity to jack up prices. Complete nonsense at best, crass commercialism at the very least, and gullible people just fall for it hook line and sinker.

I gotta say these names for the pet trade are silly— and fluid! Species are not divided by color variations! And when you consider that each actual sub species is also, phenotypically speaking, made up of morph and regional variation - the entire practice of identifying by trade names is — well, silly. Signed Black maul, sunburst Jim :)

I think one of the main points of the fancy names is $$$. Identification could be another, but I think it's secondary to the other one.
Yea.... I get it. It's merchandising. But when I first started in this hobby, when we found zoanthids for sale, instead of saying, "Look! Eagle Eye zoas!" we would just say, "Cool zoas! I want them!" They were the same zoas.....;)

Next your gonna want to build some wall around em!

Gonna be a tremendous, beautiful, and absolutely best wall you’ve ever seen. I’m gonna get dog and cat rescue shelters to pay for the wall too. And to top that I’ll make it out of StarFire glass so they can see just how good it would be to get out of the tank and be free!

Vote for a TRUE Zoa Hoarder 2020!
