I noticed there is a hose\strainer going from the overflow box to bottom of aquarium. Won't this dump all the water from the bottom of display tank into the sump? If pump or something else goes wrong?

If I remember there is an internal wall that prevents this once the surface water reaches the internal wall level. The design is close to 20 years old and never failed on my tank.

Yes, as Lowell said the pipe is not connected to the U tube and when the water drops below the surface skimmer, the flow stops.
