Two tanks, one sump - who's doing it?

So looks like he is running a single drain pipe without a valve and, in addition, takes an advantage of the fact that the two frag tanks are the same height. Also no emergency drain. I wander how loud it is. Hard to say from the video.

Since my sump has only two inlets, and to reduce the number of pipes, I have been thinking about the following setup

However, it will result in the main (1.5", black thick line) return not running a full siphon. My concern is that it will result in a significant noise.

I’ve had multiple tanks plumbed into a single sump for years. In my current system, the main display overflows into two tanks that in turn overflow into a single sump. It’s really not complicated. You just have to make sure there’s adequate capacity in the sump to hold all the drain down water in the event of a power loss. I also keep dedicated and redundant drain lines for each individual tank.

Did you merge pipes before they entered the sump? I expect the thicker, 1.5", pipe to never be fully filled with water what may cause gurgling.

Yes. That's taken care of. Sump will have 11 Gallons of spare capacity and I expect a combined 4 Gallons of drain water from all the tanks. The sump will also have an emergency overflow going to the drains and the fish-room will have an emergency drain going to the backyard. It is second floor, so I am a bit paranoid :)

I do not merge overflow drains, though since my sump is in the basement I don’t worry much about noise.

I'm running a 125 with a 20-gallon display fuge, both connected to a sump. Not sure if that's what you're looking for but it's essentially what you talking about. The 20-gallon can be disconnected/isolated from the main system by simply closing the feeder line.

I’m confused with plumping. I don’t want to have multiple pumps to feed the other display How can I had a similar setup but move the 20gal Algae display outside the cabinet?
