Ultra Reef Skimmer + Ozone

I'm currently using an Ultra Reef UKS-160 Skimmer and I'm researching ozone. I asked the manufacturer if it is rated for ozone and they state that it is not and to essentially use at your own risk.

I understand that Cast vs Extruded Acrylic makes a large difference but I'm uncertain how to tell the difference. Is anyone using Ultra Reef skimmers with ozone?

The skimmer itself is so beefy, I can't believe it's not rated for ozone. I'm wondering if it could be as simple as switching out some small components, hoses, etc.

Yeah I believe Nyos is ozone rated. I really like the ultra reef skimmer and would like to keep it because it’s so nice. I’m hoping someone has some experience using ozone with it or converting it to ozone safe.

On my Nyos I replaced the nylon screw with a titanium one as that will deteriorate over time.

its not about being beefy,,, ozone will basically destroy some plastics ...ozonizer i have to replace the output plastic connection for the hose every few years. it becomes brittle.


recommend using a secondary cheap old skimmer as the ozone reactor.

This is the route I’m considering although using an Ozone Reactor might be more pragmatic.

I recently bought an Avast Marine Ozone reactor I love it, I was running Ozone in my skimmer but in my opinion the reactor works better and no ozone smell ever

I also have an Ultra Reef Akula. How did you set it up?
I just got a Milwaukee ORP controller, and Weipro ozonizer, for starters.

Did you use an air pump going into the ozonizer, or did you just the force of the venturi?
Did you put a Y-fitting on the venturi or on the air silencer?

I'd be really grateful if you could show me a picture of how you set up the ozone going into the Akula!

I just connected a silicone tube on the Poseidon O3 out port to the little tube under this cap. That cap screws off and there’s a little intake tube inside the silencer chamber. Friction fit the silicone tube over it and done. There’s multiple ways you can do it though. You just need the ozone unit connected to the Venturi and it’ll pull air through the ozone unit.

The pump seemed to pull enough air by itself as you can hear the air rushing through the Poseidon unit when it’s on. You may have to adjust your skimmer gate valve as it’ll likely restrict the air flow a bit.

I’m sure an air pump would make it more effective, but it wasn’t necessary in my experience.

An old post, but I assume you found the skimmer to be Ozone safe, did you use ozone long term with the skimmer?

Yes absolutely no issues. About 2 years+
