I ignored everyone when they said start big and now i'm regretting it. I'm looking to go from 15 gallons to 40 and have started pricing everything out (I would go bigger but I would have to take down my freshwater tank). What i'm concerned about is will my tank go through a new cycle with all the new rock and sand? I have some bio media but it's very minimal as i'm running a Aquaclear70 HOB filter for filtration and would be upgrading to a Rimless 45 gallon drilled and plumbed to a 20L sump. Would my coral and fish be OK going into the new tank or would I have to keep them in a temp tank for a while? My tank never went through a "ugly stage" as I did a 3 month dark start and i'm really hoping to avoid that with this upgrade but a lightless cycle would obviously be impossible with coral

Do you not have rock and sand in your current tank? If you do, you should move that to the new tank and this will avoid another cycle because you’ll already have enough biological filter to handle your bioload.

I do I just wasn't sure if 12lb of live rock would be able to offset it

Here’s the way to think about it - the bacterial colonies currently existing in your rock are able to support your current livestock, so as long as you transition everything smoothly the same biological filter will stay in place!
