Looking to get a few urchins for my 75 gal for GHA.

Looking between pincushion, tuxedo, or Halloween. Any recommendations on the best pair?
I’d go Tuxedo Urchins. Especially the Blue ones. Best bang for your buck. Personally not a fan of pencils. Just keep in mind urchins don‘t discriminate so they will eat into the rock bad ad good algae. Also they like wearing hats so keep corals glued tight.

I have two smaller to medium sized blue and red in my 65G display. They live up to their reputation and are constantly scavenging. Can -also confirm they like to wear hats or costumes even. Both of mine wear empty shells and zoas that they’ve plucked from large colonies. I find it entertaining.

Tuxedo are good workers - just drag things around. I like pencil urchins

I have a tuxido in my 75, hard worker, love that dude. But, if it isnt glued down and fits on his head, he'll take it.

My (tank bred) tuxedo is the biggest contributor to the control I have over algae now. That said the constant throwing frags off the rack to the sand is driving me a little crazy ;)

agree that blue (or colored) tuxedos are fun, pleasant hard workers but also endorse the pencil urchin - eat most algae, including Coraline, but that grows back... and they don't in my experience carry stuff around

Look up Vossen Aquatics - Red Tuxedo Urchins. Sometimes out of stock but message them for next availability / schedule. Purchased 5 of them a few months back and they are great and fun to watch grow.

  • Aquacultured
  • Small which helps navigate large rock formations if that is something you have
  • Reach full size in a couple of months

I only have experience with my royal blue tuxedo, it has surpassed my expectations for algae control. But I do have minimal coralline left in my tank. It did the frag thing for about 5 months but seems content with the the current rock rubble it is wearing and has left my frags alone for the past 5 months.

1. Anything smaller than 300 gallons, stick to 1. They are voracious eaters and can easily starve if overcrowded.

Loved having my urchin, however, waking up to rock not being where it was when i went to sleep, was quite concerning. Make sure all rock work is secured or you may end up with a rock through the glass. Lol

Max I would do (2). I have a pincushion urchin that gets around the tank quickly and will definitely knock stuff over but great cleaner. Couples well with a short spine. I have a short spine, also good cleaner, but that particular urchin is a bit slower and stays more in one area at least IME
