So having this and a refugium with chaeto would be redundant?

Yes, if the purpose if removing nutrients. No, if the purpose is to grow large pods; but you should use rock rubble instead.

cut my screen in half about 5 days ago and it is growing algae much fast now.

That's a good indicator that it was not filtering as it should. When it is, the chaeto will go away.

Hmmm...yeah my cheato is still growing for sure. So think my screen is too small now or is there something else I should do?
