Coming up on the year mark for my Pentair UV bulb. Question are UV bulbs created equal? Amazon has replacements for $39 generic vs $80 Pentair.

In general I'd say bulbs are NOT created equal and you get what you pay for. I don't have specific experience with purchasing UV bulbs, but given it is a functional item that is meant to be relatively long-lived, if it were me I'd go for the brand name replacement. Doesn't matter so much if you're just talking household lighting bulbs, for example.

No, not all bulbs are created equal… short of differences in manufacturing quality; the materials chosen for construction can vary depending on application…

For example; you can buy UV bulbs with glass, or quartz bulb sleeves… the former is used for black lights/etc, The latter is used for germicidal sterilization! (Unlike glass, quartz doesn’t block any substantial amount of UV light transmission!)

Pentair uses a quartz sleeve with the bulb inserted in it. Either way I go this is just a bulb replacement not the sleeve. I guess I used the phrase incorrectly, all I want to know has anyone used the Amazon replacements as a quality replacement was more or less my question.

I've used Amazon generic replacement bulbs made by "LSE Lighting" with my 25W Pentair UV sterilizer for the last year (Aug 2025 to Aug 2026). I just replaced it with another of the same Amazon UV bulb. I totally understand the skepticism but...comparing OEM and generic UV bulbs:

Bulbs look and install identically
Bulbs emit the same "glow" at the top of the sterilizer
Bulbs pull same wattage
After 1 yr quartz sleeve is still perfectly clear (i.e. nothing grows on it, so the bulb must emit enough UV to nuke anything alive)

I mention the last point because I am concerned that the generic bulbs might put out less UV (although equivalent power maybe some of that is wrong wavelength?). I don't know for sure but I cannot tell the difference on my tank.

Another caveat is that I don't know if I got lucky with mine and other Amazon UV bulbs are trash. The ones I got are made by LSE Lighting.
