UV Sterilizer Install Questions

Also You have to consider maintaining it. As well as for me the convenience of setting other lines to treat for algae or parasite control. I would definitely plumb it separately

Mine is vertical and I run at 12 hours daily and at night
 
Orientation:

Vertical - air cannot be trapped while the pump is running. However, with the pump off and no check valve, the lamp can run dry.

Horizontal, plumbing top - air cannot be trapped while the pump is running. With pump off there may or may not be water covering the lamp. A check valve would still be required in some instances if run-dry is a concern.

Horizontal, plumbing down or sideways - If the flow is not sufficient to both clear the air and keep the chamber full, the lamp may be exposed to air during operation. This is risky at best, and in most cases a terrible idea.
 
Im not following what youre saying. Are you saying maintaining the UV unit itself? Like changing the bulb and quartz sleeve? The UV body housing can be anywhere really. On the UNS system I worked on, it fit horizontally right next to the sump so the bulb could pull straight out towards the front.

I did A layout in theory. The lines supplying the light ran up and over the Tank rim. three ( parallel ) lines were involved . One a bypass where the UV could be isolated, or removed for replacement or maintain . Yes bulb sleeve rinsing ect. Second line preset to treat algae. Third for parasites . So that with valves could be put on line right away , and I would have already set the flow . I saw another article where timing is important to start treating parasites , because by the time you see them they are established. I calculated flow loss into it as well. I have it drawn up with all the required fittings
 
Why do you do that?
It extends bulb life and at night, Planktonic life and organisms are more dormant at night as are dinoflagellates and least likely to pass through UV channel as they do during the day. For many reefers , it depends on the health of livestock and their goals for the tank.

I gotta say, I still dont understand what your saying. If the exposure kills parasites, it kills algae too. I dont know what a separate line is needed for that. But, to each, their own.

Good point. I have to say that that makes absolute sense. Since I have decided not to try to control algae it will not be needed anyway ( my fish gobble the algae up as I clean the glass sometimes getting in the way ) I use a razor blade cleaner not one of those block things

I cant grasp the bulb life thing unless you mean in comparison of running it 24 hours. Very interesting approach regarding the dormancy period . My real question is why you run it all the time , and not just when you need it.

Prevention of disease and algae is my ultimate goal. When waiting for something to occur,,,,, UV is not an eraser and may then be too late
 
Looks like you're using a UNS tank. I have the 150 so there is a bit of space to the left of the sump. I just laid it down horizontally and ran a hose to i and one back into return chamber from that barb fitting. I'm guessing yours doesn't have room for that though since its a 90.

I think I can make it work. It will be tight though - lol.

This is almost splitting hairs, and the benefit might be negligible, but it I did this (and I installed aUV on a UNS near exactly as you did), Id runthe return hose as far over into towards the socks as I could. This allows (theoretically) the water to just not immediately recirculate through the UV.

Yeah, I just didnt want to run a big ol hose around the tank and everything. It seems to be working ok for now. I know its not ideal but the waters super clear.

I thought about that last night. I also thought about positioning the return line directly in front of the return pump inlet hoping that would pull more of the sterilized water to the display tank. Do you think that would be a good solution?

Nevermind - that would have the opposite effect since I’m using the inlet fitting from the return line. I like your idea and may use it since I can route the tubing along the back.

I cant say how much benefit you'd have, but (in theory) the water leaving the UV will be distributed and diluted much more by the time it reaches the pump again, so more likely youre pulling "unUVed" water. This is why I, and other, like sizing and running UVs from return pump directly to display. That way all water leaving the sump is 100% UV filtered before the display, where it will dilute out before hitting the sump again.

Its my unmeasured and unproven paranoia that pump and return in the same chamber just recycles the same water through the UV. I know thats mathematically impossible, but it has to be likely this way.

In non- UNS sump, I try to run it as far from the supply pump as possible. In the perfect world, the supply pump is upstream of the outlet.
