Vermetid???

Just got this piece today. Pulled it out literally as soon as I saw the tube. Is that a vermetid?????

are all the little spikes vermetids or just the big one? i dont even know if i want to put this piece back in if those small spikes r vermetids. i tried scraping off as many as i could with pliers

All the little spikes are vermetids. I have them in my tank.
Ive never actually seen one of the bigger ones like you have in the picture. I wish mine were that size so I could get rid of them easier.

should i try and return this coral or even bother leaving it in the tank? i thought the small ones were so small they just looked like part of the coral but if they are ALL vermetids then that may pose a dire issue

worst case i guess ill find out when i feed the coral tomorrow. hopefully it isnt too late by then

I’d get it out of the tank… these things spread quick once they’re in a system!

ill see if i can try and call the store tomorrow or something. scraped the living bejesus out of the frags i got today trying to destroy anything even close to resembling one. i am a new reefer so this is stressful. ill probably continue scraping tomorrow but as i dont have a qt tank i am fighting between removing the infected pieces or destroying 200 bucks worth of new frags.

I think they are inevitable to be honest. It will be difficult to keep a tank for a long time permanently free of them. A tiny bit of glue on the opening or simply breaking them off (ensure to get the base as well, that's where the animal will be hiding) will get the job done, imo.

It is near impossible to keep vermitids out of a reef tank. They will sneak in one way or another so then you’ll have to figure out how to keep the population in check (eg, how you feed and bumblebee snails). That said, it is good practice to try avoiding adding known pests when possible. For any new corals I try to remove them from any rocks or frag plugs they come on. For coral with a hard skeleton like torches or hammers, I use an electric dental pick from Amazon to scrape down the skeletal area where there is no coral flesh.
